Sport mode... Whats the point?

Love Texas, my stepbrother got married way out west in Marfa on a ranch.

 

its the most magical thing in this city.
It turns every motorist into and idiotic fuck. Bunch of cunts that act like they've never driven a car before or like its suddenly something new. We get it every year and still no one knows how to drive in it. Pathetic

 

I haven't spent much time in West Texas, but I've heard that Marfa is a neat town to visit

I have tried it a few times going up hill and did not see a use for me (so far anyway). I have tried it several times going downhill, and under those conditions it works quite well. I consider it one more tool available. If it's steep enough where engine compression won't hold it back and brakes lighten up the rear, it's pretty sweet to have independently controlled braking that maintains a nice speed. I certainly could get by without it, but anxious passengers really like it.

That "get yourself out of sand" feature works. I've used it a few times (going uphill) and it was faster than airing down. Though to be clear, airing down ahead of time would have prevented the stuck to begin with.

I started as a CC skeptic, but I'm now convinced it has value under certain conditions.

this forum hurts my brain. Why can't i drive at 45mph in 1st. Why won't my incredibly complex mechanical system let me drive it until it melts the transmission and motor?

 

You and I are alike. I do this.
For instance the new Corolla Sport, has a really amazing transmission with paddle shifters. I had the opportunity to drive them as loaners when my truck was in for services.
In its' case, in Sport mode, the car actually feels and drive much different than Eco mode which is default. It's throaty, and has more torque and throttle response.
When you shift to Sport mode, the car would automatically choose a gear based on your current speed. The paddle shift gear selection is blindingly fast, even before you let go of the paddle, it's already in the next gear.
Same when you slow down or come to a stop from a higher gear. The car would automatically downshift to 1 when you come to a stop.
And as you rev up, and when the rev limitter hits the max rpm band near the red line for the gear, and will automatically up-shift for you.
It is such an amazing cool little sporty and responsive car that is so light and so much fun to drive with. Especially the cornering and handling is night and day difference.
You could also use the paddle shifters to control the gears even when it's in Eco Drive mode, it will still up-shift and down shift for you.

Where as in our Tacoma's if you say chose to drive in 2 or 3, the truck simply will not go any faster than it's max speed of that specific gear, neither would it up-shift. In fact, the truck would actually lunge back and slow down with a very noticeable lurch and noise. The shift response is also slow and takes a complete second and a half.

Every day I wish if our truck had a transmission like the Corolla Sport.

I've been over Lost Trail pass twice in the last week. 4,000' up and 4,000' down (It tops out at 8,000'). I really like the Sport mode for the downhill. Makes all the sense in the world. It's an improvement over my 2nd-gen I traded in.

It'll be a bonus for this week's camp-trailer adventure. It'll be Bannock pass this time.

I find myself leaving mine in sport mode almost all the time. usually in 4th or 5th unless I'm on the highway.
seems to stop the tranny from wanting to shift all the time

 

I drove it sport mode most of the day and it definitely drove better. Thanks to all who explained what it actually does. I was not using it the way it was meant to be used.

 

If you are just driving on normal 55 mph roads S5 is the bomb not more shifting back and forth from 5th to 6th. I got straight to S5 every time. Love the truck now.

If you ever go up Pikes Peak...or better yet go down it...you will love it.

My wife's Subie has paddles... I'm a down shifting fool going down hills and for braking. The only thing, the Tacoma is not as nearly as responsive as the the Subie.

 

Does anyone have thought that the "s" on our A/T's is for "shift" instead of "sport" so you can shift gears. I just realized that.. might be stupid but it could be..

 

But there's this book that answers like 40% of the questions of the threads started on tacomaworld. Amazing how many waste their time on their phone/computer asking for an answer they already have!

 

It doesn't matter, people will do what they want to do. You cannot make them do what you want them to do. It is a big waste to be telling them constantly to "read the manual". They just won't do it since people answer them anyway.
