    We use this Rutland product to start fires. One square, a few pieces of 1" to 2" size kindling, a decent draft, and presto.

    Last summer, I put junk mail in a 5 gallon bucket, let it soak overnight, then put a 5 inch circular saw blade on some 3/8" threaded rod, and shredded the paper in that. Pour the mix through another 5 gallon bucket with holes drilled and slots cut in the side to drain water, then press it to get more water out. Form it into a couple of paper logs and let it dry in the sun for a few days to a week. Now that we are in winter, those paper logs are nice and dry and work great for starting fires. They aren't as dense as wood but when sprayed with charcoal lighter fluid, and lit, that starts the fire very easily. I mix plastic from envelopes in as well, and thought about adding some wax, probably parafin as it is easy to get and relatively cheap. These do leave a lot of ash behind after they are burnt.

    I just stick with a twist of newsprint, bark, & scraps from splitting because I don't like anything other than wood products going up my flue. :notsure:
    I do use fire mice (newsprint rolled up, tied with string, and soaked in candle wax) when I'm camping, though.

    A little lighter fluid makes things so easy, even my wife can start a fire. She prefers her cone trick, which is a small cone (pine or otherwise) with a piece of wick from a candle wrapped around it, put into an egg carton, then wax melted onto it. Rip off one at a time, put it in the bottom if the pile then light it. It's like a woody candle.

    I don't understand the whole last page of this thread

    If you can't start a fire with paper and kindling you are either burning wet wood , you are trying to start a fire with pieces that are too big or you are retarded

    We don't get a newspaper. I do use kindling - side benefit is that I *can* use "too big" pieces that would never light just with paper, probably the size you toss on as your second load. And I can start a fire with paper and kindling but the bricks are much much easier and I'm lazy.

    Sorry, no clue for the "don't understand" thing. Good luck with it though!

    does turning tires to black wall out count? How bout added snug top rebel.
    I've only started fires with paper and kindling. I met a guy that used his sawdust soaked in kerosene.

    I grew up in a house with only wood heat, including kitchen stove, so I've lit a few fires, two crumbled up pieces of newspaper and couple handfuls of kindling is the only way I've ever done it.
