Neck shots are the way to go! Dropped both of these deer in their tracks.

I actually try and avoid neck shots, because I like a good neck roast and running a bullet through there tends to ruin them.

Since I don't particularly care to eat the lungs that's usually where I aim for, and I've never seen one run further than 100 yards after you powder the lungs.

only killed 2, but both were behind the shoulder. one dropped where he stood and she flopped like 2 yards from where she was hit. dont have a wall hanger yet, so definitely not going neck shot.

If i have a prop inside 100 yards on a doe its base of the neck where it meets the shoulder if possible. I like a shoulder in the crockpot with some gravy. If those specifics cant be met i aim midway up or just more just behind the shoulder, this gives the largest margin of error for miscalculated distance and pull/no prop and wind and what not and usually saves the shoulders depnding on angle.

I just seem to destroy too much meat when I take shoulder shots.

Idiots. I go straight for the brain.

Kidding. I go for the lungs right behind the front shoulder. Their lungs are huge, so it's not hard to miss unless you're way far out or you're bow hunting.

if they are too close its easy to hit just 1 lung and a deer can live over 7 hours with just one good lung... ask me how I know

    True.
*BUT*, a high percentage of my shoulder shots usually blow up the heart as well as blowing out their front wheel drive.
I don't mess with the shoulders much as I usually grind what's left of them.
Exit damage from a 2 3/4 inch Slugger shot from a 12ga. 870 smooth barrel with iron sights. I since switched to a Savage 220.

Damn, I'd be so pissed if that happened. The closest shot I've ever taken was last season on a doe and it was probably 10 yds out. I was in a chair up against a tree and it snuck up me and was like 5' from me and I thought it was gonna hear my damn heart beating I was so excited lol. It finally started to walk off and at 10 yds she stopped and the rest is history:

I only post that because I've been too damn busy to take hunting seriously this season and I ain't killed shit! I've only been able to get out about 4-5 times. We've still got a week left....hopefully it'll get cold.

Not if you're ground hunting, which is probably 70% of what I do. And whenever I'm in my tree seat I see them long before they get close enough for that to be a risk; Probably 99% of the shots I've taken from a tree have been at least 50 yards out
