I don't know why people refuse to accept the computer mileage calculations. My Tacoma computer was accurate every time I compared it to manual. Same for my Canyon. Double check and make sure, but I bet they calculate almost the same. I think your mileage sucks because of all the stop signs, hills, and city driving. And Tacoma's get shitty mileage to start with. Take a trip out of the city on a open highway, and see what mileage you get. If it's somewhere around 18 with a stock suspension, it's the type of driving you do, not the truck, or a break even period.

This. If I drive on flat highway--no stops and no load, I get about 25mpg. Otherwise I'm averaging about 18.5 to 19 in real world driving.

Because its wrong. Perfect example, I filled up around 390 miles when my tank was E right when the gas light came on and the computer said I had 18 miles left. Thats a total available computer miles of 408. My truck averaged 19.5 mpgs on that tank. 408/21.1 Gallon tank = 19.3 mpgs. Thats close right? WRONG. Truck still has 3 gallons left in it when the gas light comes on and when truck is on E I put in 18 gallons almost exactly at the pump. So my true mpg was 390 miles driven/18 gallons of gas = 21.6 mpgs.

Maybe a trim SRS VS Sport difference, mine say 29.
+30% pressure above the recommended sounds excess. I had mine at 35 PSI and the truck felt a little too jumpy. Dropped them down to 30 and it rides planted.

2 to 3 gallons of reserve in there. The computer works fine for me.

How much in reserve doesn't matter if you're calculating how many gallons you actually used vs. how many miles you drove. I'll fill it all the way to the top, and write down the miles. When I fill up next time, I just look at how many gallons I put back in to fill it to the top, and divide out the miles I drove. Always comes out the same at the computer. Just my experience.

The purpose of not running dry was not so much about crap in the bottom of the tank. Fuel lubricates and cools the pump so it is best practice to keep it submerged if you can.

Keeping it submerged would mean never letting your tank go below half since the fuel pumps are typically cylindrical top-to-bottom in conventional fuel tanks. But i'll give you this much, they get cooled by the fuel that goes through them. Which also means they can run "outside". But, of course, running "out of fuel" will not be good.

I can't speak for the Tacoma nor will I ever try it, but I know some modern cars will actually shut the engine off if the fuel pressure is unable to build-up, in order to preserve parts such as the fuel pump.

Different engine, but I got 24mpg on my first tank. Take a day trip using the hwy, I'll bet it gets much better.

I saw that thread actually. But leaking fuel seems kind if far fetched doesnt it? I'm taking it to the dealership this week to do the transmission tsb since it was not done. I asked the salesperson that sold me the truck if they did the tsb and he told me no. Ill ask about my mpg situation while I am there.

Yes I do idle alot. A lot of my driving is stop and go short trips. Sometimes I just meed to run in for a couple seconds I just let the truck idle and jump back in and take off.

My actual mileage is about .3-.5mpg better than what the truck claims. Complete opposite of the Tundra, which routinely got .9mpg less than indicated

Anyone else read this in Trumps voice? That's not how I figure MPGs. Fill the tank and reset your trip meter. At your next fill up, divide miles driven by gallons on the pump. This is the same way Fuelly and other fuel tracking apps work. It's always been within .5 of what the computer says for me. True for every car I've ever owned that has had Avg MPG display.

Only on Tacomaworld.....did you not read the post? 390 trip miles/18 gallons filled at the pump = 21.6 mpgs...my computer said 19.5

I did the same thing today 272.2 miles driven 13.643 gallons to fill, equals 19.95 miles per gallon. My computer said 19.1

Mine is perfect. Filled up today at 342 miles and put 17.02 gallons in. Tank average fuel economy showed 20 MPG

Working at Advance Auto Parts and being very vehicle savvy I used to preach this all the time....but after watching my mother in law put no more than $5 at a time in her 2008 V8 Tahoe for the past 5 years....I don't think it really hurts them.

The gas light literally doesn't go off in the thing...I feel bad for it but she would much rather stop and put $5 in it every single day instead of filling it up once a week. Makes no sense.

Electric fuel pumps are made so much better than they use to be. What kills them now is running them out of fuel. There are very close tolerances inside the pumps that need the fuel going through them for lubrication and cooling. The other is bad gas. Bad gas sitting in the pump and not being used in a long time will build up inside the pump making a crusty scale and seize the pump. I had this issue in my Suzuki. I just let it sit too long with old gas. It was a nightmare to clean out of the fuel system. No solvents will remove the hardened scale.
