If you ground the radio, I dont think you need a strap. I didnt technically ground mine since I painted the hole I made, and have done a hood clip install with no ground.

 

Talking about the connector, not the cable OD lol

 

The nmo hole is big. I have the metal cutting tool I used to do it. Used once...

 

Really? I didn't have mine grounded when I first installed and it was ok, as soon as I threw a ground strap on the antenna to frame my distance was great

the hole for it is super small. The ring on the outside is big though.

 

That part circled sits inside the hole that gets mounted to the truck and the antenna screws on to that, sandwiching the mount.

 

Yeah that's the base of the antenna, but you only have to drill out the middle section. The part you circled screws on the center, so hole is small.

 

That is the one I have also, the hole for the gold part to mount the antenna onto is what I am talking about, I pushed it up through my plate bumper. Is a lot bigger than all other antennas you will put on your rig.

Maybe for the antenna you are using. The one I have screws on to the larger 3/4" section.

 

Really? are we talking about the same connector? I know CB's are 1/2" and this one is smaller. I'll take a pic.

 

I'm going to have to take a photo and show you guys. Yes, the antenna goes on the larger gold part, but that's not the size hole I have to drill.

 

I know what you're talking about Iggy, I think you just have a different antenna. Look at the Antenna I linked, that base screws on the to larger 3/4" section (and probably the middle part too?) so that entire bronze section gets used

 

That is a pic of one of my four nmo antennas. They are all the same. The base screws onto the gold part and makes contact with the pin in the middle. I had to cut a hole for the whole gold portion to rise through the plate bumper to use the antennas.

We should just rename this thread to a antenna thread and start over for the camping and wheeling thread....

 

Ok, so I was partially wrong, forgot how the NMO base is set up. I forgot the larger ring unscrews, and the smaller 3/4" portion is what goes through the hole and then the ring gets screwed on again.


ANYHOO, back to ground straps, anyone recommend one?

 

The hole for the mount to pass through is maybe a 1/4"

 

So yours is a hair difference. my ring comes off as well like that, but the inner part is still about 3/4"
