couple of questions here. Just ordered taco. It has the TRD alum skid plate on it but I cant remember if the origianl skid plate is behind it or not.
So if I took it off would there still be the Black OEM skid?
Im wanting to install a black warn transformer and think that the silver skid on a dark red truck is a little much but if I did keep it on there, would the warn transformer fit in the tow hook holes that are open in the TRD alum skid plate?

    Thanks

ok, i was confused because alot of people were saying theyre supposed to mount over the stock oem. What would the stock black piece cost if its not on there?

If your truck was purchased with the TRD OR package then there is a black skid plate that is installed from the factory. The TRD "accessory" skid plate mounts over the top of that. If you did not get the OR package then you will only have the "accessory" skid plate.

oh ok, or is off road, yeah thats what i thought but some people are saying no its not on there if it comes from factory and that some people didnt have it on when they had the alum skid. But the factory instructions are to bolt it over so it would make sense for it to have it.

Oddly enough, I have both the black factory skid, and the TRD Skid over it... but I have the '09 Sport Style. I bought the truck new from dealer, maybe I got lucky!

Poke your head under the truck, unbolt the gray TRD Skid (should have only 4 bolts), it's maybe all of 5 minutes to do. As you unbolt it, the black factory skid will drop down with it. On the front of it there will be two hanger style hooks that hook to the cross member of the frame, the 4 bolts that you will loosen include 2 that go through the middle of the gray and black skid, and the last two are all of the way underneath the truck. Hope this helps.

    Some misinformation in this thread.

First of all what some are referring to as a TRD Skidplate is the silver Toyota Accessory plate that can be purchased from the accessory catalog. This silver plate mounts over the black STOCK plate that from my understanding all models of Tacoma's have, 2wd and 4wd, TRD Sport and Off Road (not sure about 5 lugs).

The TRD Off Road package has an additional skid plate underneath the engine that semi protects the engine block and oil pan.

In summary, all Tacoma's have one front mounted skid plate that sweeps upward from underneath the radiator and bolts on near the tow hooks. The TRD Off Road has a second skid plate that mounts rearward of the front standard plate and semi protects the engine block and oil pan.

No, its an accessory. The silver accessory plate do not come from the factory - it is an accessory added by the dealership that is added into the price, whether you know it or not, regardless of model or trim level.

^^ This is incorrect. All 6 lug trucks (SR5 and TRD packages) have the black steel skid plate. If you choose to buy the TRD Aluminum Skid plate its placed over the black steel skid plate. So, if you buy the aluminum skid plate you will have both.

That's not odd. I got the Aluminum skid plate a week after getting the Tacoma.

The dealership agreed to install it as part of purchasing the vehicle. They initially took the black skid plate off... but when I got home I read over the installation instructions, and it clearely stated "DO NOT REMOVE THE FRONT SKID PLATE." So I took it back to have it reinstalled.

If you are missing the black skid plate under your aluminum one, ask for it back!
