My truck will be parked outside for about 100% of it's life until I find a decent house to move into. Would it be a good idea to get carpet for the dash to help protect against sun damage, or is it just plain stupid? Not trying to win a fashion contest, but would it really protect anything?

...^^^... Make sure the dash carpet is VERY soft on the back ... the dash paint scratches very easily.

Better off with the folding windshield sun shades. Cheaper, too.

I'm reading a tad bit of sarcasm. I know people who after years of parking their vehicles under our California sun, their dashboards would discolor or crack.

    .
I seriously thought about a dash carpet but some have rough backing on them.

They do, but they attach with adhesive strips like velcro that are adhesive backed and attach to the dash, so they don't move around much.

LOL. I mean - who would not want a carpet in his truck?

Window tint and a good set of window shades would be better IMO. I have a dashmat in one of my vehicles, it works great, but the tint and sunshades help keep the steering wheel and shifter from being magma hot.

If you're looking at just having a dashmat, go for it. You can get them customized with pretty much anything, in any color.

My dash mat was always a dirt magnet... I actually don't recall having seen too many vehicles lately that have cracked dashes... they went away from that crap vinyl stuff and went to a plastic in more recent years. I think honestly you would just be doing it for looks at this point. Window shades and some good tint do a lot more to protect and interior than a dash mat. Heat reduction is what its all about! Go with whatever you like! make it your own!

My thoughts? I think it's so 80's on the domestic cars that had those dashes that came apart. Sunshade and aerospace 303 UV protectant should work well on the current stuff.
