Better to ask for forgiveness....than permission. They have the same rules around here concerning pole barns..... yet I see a lot of them with lights on.

Yup, talk about grey rules.... I buried a shipping container under my deck. I don't think my inspector even knew what page to turn to for that! Lol....good luck with everything.

I remember seeing a picture in here of that. Made me completely rethink what I want to build when I get some land in the woods.

Just make sure everything you do is at least code level... if you get popped and have done sub par work, they very well may make you tear it down. If you go above and beyond, they likely will just make you pay double permit fees and slap you with a wet noodle.

I posted this in the wood working thread by mistake so I am dropping it here also, thanks for any ideas.

I am wanting to do something like in these pictures for our basement ceiling. It has an old drop ceiling right now and I hate it and wish it to be gone. However I need to retain access to a few things in the ceiling (water meter, access for duct cleaning and whatever...). I have not figured out how I can hold the batten boards up yet not have to see the screws which hold them up and make it so they can come down to gain access to the ceiling. I thought why not use white screws (if we paint the batten boards white) but I feel like there has to be another way I just don't know about.

    Any ideas?

The battens create a grid and the panels just lay in like a drop ceiling correct ?

That's my idea then if I have to gain access I remove a few battens and remove the panel.

Shouldn't you just be able to lift the panels out like a drop ceiling or are you fixing everything right to the underside of the floor joists ?

My idea was to fix it to the floor joists so that I could make it level and also not loose any height. Course if I did it like a drop ceiling then I could fasten the battens with wood instead of the crappy wire that the drop ceiling used and allowed it to move and become unlevel.

Thanks man, if you go back a couple pages here you can catch the shipping container in a pic I put up of my retaining walls I built. When I knew I was gonna build a new house, I almost built a shipping container one. Laws are real fuzzy on them in PA. Here is pics of my favorite one.IMG_0002.jpgIMG_0001.jpg

I don't see how there is any advantage to shipping containers over conventional building for residential buildings

I mean its kinda cool and all and they are awesome for storage but once you start cutting them apart you have to reinforce them plus there is the issues with services and insulation

I guess you are using less wood than you normally would. So they are a little greener than conventional framing. You are also repurposing the containers which have to be retired after so many hours/years at sea.

Yeah but there is still a cost to the containers that offsets the lumber costs , plus then you still have to modify and reinforce the containers to cut and attach them plus no stud bays for services and insulation

They are using 2x 4's and spray insulating...with good results, or surface mount in warmer climates, with an industrial look. We had this conversation before...being green isn't alway cheaper...but man does it feel better.

Here's the thing though , and I'm by no means anti green or a science denier , if you end up packing out all the exterior surfaces of the containers with 2x4's for services and insulation , where is your big "green" acheivement over just framing it
