I tie lots of flies of every type and never took a class. I read how-to books. Buy this book. It does not have any recipes but has every technic in the free world. This $100 book will be the best fly tying investment you'll make. Have fun.

I saw this scene at my local park pond a couple of days ago. I was trying out a new rod while also watching a bass fisherman across the pond from me. He was tossing a huge, 8-10", rubber trout replica lure. He wasn't catching any bass but he did manage to attract a few of the local birds with his very life-like bait. Here are a few pics I took of the Osprey that zeroed in on the trout lure and swooped down for the grab. After watching this I asked the guy if he ever snags the birds (as you can see in the pics, the treble hooks are pretty sizeable on that lure). He said no, the birds will snatch the lure and try to fly away with it but will drop their catch after a few feet of flight. I asked him to remove the hooks and toss a few more casts..he did and the birds then had no interest in the trout lure. Seems the hooks give the lure the perfect presentation, so good the Osprey, Herons, Pelicans, Seagulls and Cormorants all made moves on the bait.

Anyone catch a fish on day 1 on 2017? I caught this beautiful bow yesterday. What a tremendous fight. He was not expecting to be hooked with that mouthful of grub.

Another cold cloudy day here today. Has me reminiscing of some alpine fishing back in Sept..This is lake takes about two hours to hike to. We pass it on our way somewhere to another blue dot. This was at 5:51pm my buddy trying to get some last casts in. Still had 2 hours to go to the truck. This is above 12,000 ft. There are some big rainbows in here but tough to catch because of lake size. I like to fish ledges. In another trip here I had wife up on the hill behind me spotting fish. I hucked out a 4" long streamer and started the retrieve. As soon as I could see the fly cresting the shelf hear comes a big slimer. It was so big my wife was even very excited. He slashed at it twice but I was too excited and jerked it out of the water. The rainbow still raced across the shallows to try and get it but then he spotted me and was gone back to the depths. The shelf on this lake is pretty long in most places so its hard to cast over and the fish don't get up on it except a coupke months a year when water is warmest.

Great way to start the year. I went out New Years Eve, spent 4 hours in the river without a take. I guess that's Winter fishing. We're supposed to get above freezing for the first time in a month, next week. Hopefully that will wake up the fish.
