I love my Mastercraft Baja RS a lot, I've also sat in @thegame PRPs the bolsters were higher and overall had more of a race feel and also very comfy.

Same thing could be said for needing a harness :notsure:

It was more just a point that one safety device usually requires another. That people forget a lot. Especially with cages.

Is there an advantage to the Ford 9 over the LC 9.5 center

I would just need a harness to keep my head from hitting the cage in this tiny ass cab. Hans device free since my leaf sprung junk is not going above 3mph on the trail. I for sure would not be wearing a harness without a cage though, good way to go from 90% chance of injury in a roll to 100%.

The next thing i build isnt going to have a cab lol!!

Besides draining your wallet 100% faster, the 9s have a pinion bearing that helps stop deflection and broken ring gears.

I would also add depending where you live parts can be easier to find in stock at a parts store, they have been used forever and haven't changed much.

Same could be said for the 9.5. In production from 1960 to 1997. And what are you really going to fix on the side of the road that is diff related with parts store parts?

My next project will be a cage. Haven't done it because quite frankly, I have not found an idea that I like. I do NOT want an exo cage, but with a regular cab things are super tight. Really need to find examples and do more research before I move forward.

Good to know. I'll add that to my list. Still reading and researching a lot.

The Ford 9 is, arguably, the the strongest differential out there. As mentioned above, they have that pinion bearing that stops deflection. It has been used on NASCAR; - do they still use it by the way? Dunno. I am not much of a NASCAR person but back in the days I remember many - if not all - cars had a Ford 9 in the rear end.

Anyway, a differential that can withstand that kind of abuse with that much horse power is certainly strong. A lot of Ultra 4 rigs have custom axles with those differentials. They are virtually indestructible.

Now, we can argue about being overkill strength wise for a recreation wheeler :D But rest assured, an axle built with those, like a 609, will literally be the last axle you'll ever build. Best way to spend money on an for sure.

Right, that's why I said depending where you live. Middle America in butt f Egypt you're more likely to find domestic parts, something that probably half the cars in that town of 500 people have in them. As far as side of the road, who knows? If I blow a diff and need a replacement asap I know they are easier to find. I watched 4 people blow up 8 and 8.4 in Moab and they had to wait for parts to be mailed in, and those are current so you would think parts would be on the shelf.

These were the first 4 I saw, not a single 9.5 on my local Craigslist. I'm not here to say one is better than the other, only that 9" are a dime a dozen.

The second one is the only one I could use with my shafts but if you were 31 no problem.

Personally I have given up on any "import" part being stocked. I can honestly say since I've started driving so 12 years ago (yes im young by some standards, 26) that I have not had a single import part be stock. That includes simple things like NGK spark plugs.

Hit car-part.com for the Bay Area and there are a ton of FZJ80 thirds for sale locally. They aren't rare at all. 4.10 V6 thirds are all over yards too.

You must shop at terrible parts stores then. I just picked up FJ60 rotors and v6 mini truck pads at my local Napa. The parts stores in Harlan KY even had a Toyota u-joint on the shelf last time I was there.

Typical O'Reillys/advnced auto/auto zone bullshit. Never found Napa to be in better. I've owned Hondas, Nissan's, and now Toyotas. Never had something in stock at a store I walked into. The hondas might have had spark plug wires if I drove to another one. My 240 I eventually convinced them to carry their crappy rebuilt starter so I could change it out once a week. Haven't had to buy anything for the yota yet

I sort of agree with the anti-toyota parts mob :D I obviously love my toyota truck, especially now with the SAS. But I wouldn't go as far as to say that toyota parts are readily available everywhere. Jeez, even the local Toyota dealer in Phoenix AZ has to custom order everything each time I go there. Last time I changed my spark plugs they did not even have the damn wires in stock LOL. And this is the biggest dealer in in the State of AZ. Oh, and they only had 3 spark plugs haha.

This reality really hit me hard when I started my SAS. Good grief, axles parts, transfer case parts, etc.; it was so hard to source anything. Switched to Dana/14bolt axles and what a huge difference.

Awesome deal for those of you that havr tons of toyota parts at your disposal where you live. But for some of us in some other parts of the country, it is a struggle.

Whenever i walk into a parts store and ask for parts for my tacoma i get blank stares or they dont have it. Hell i went off in auto zone because they didnt have any goddamm brake lines or fittings. "Well its an unusual size" the fuck??? its not like im driving a jensen interceptor or something weird, its a goddamn toyota!! I dont even attempt to look in a junkyard for anything. 100% of my parts come from the internet for any of my toyotas besides wiper blades, brake pads and fluids. The midwest sucks unless you are driving some POS domestic.

Snowys smoking crack, and that orileys ujoint was shatterd into a million pieces the next ride out, it may as well have been made out of plastic!

One reason to never buy parts store parts for anything, domestic or foreign, if it isn't a wear item. OEM all the way if you can wait. But in a pinch it did serve its purpose and get you back wheeling that day and home the next.

I've lived in Northern Illinois, various suburbs of Indianapolis, and now Northwest Indiana and never had a struggle getting common things for any foreign car. Ie. brake lines, pads, drum shoes, rotors, master cylinder, plug wires, etc. The only one that's ever been hard to buy for is the STi, and no way do parts store parts touch that thing. Maybe I'm just lucky

Axle stuff I get there's a big and frustrating difference. Not many shops carry Toy steer axle stuff that stopped production circa 1985. I was jealous of my Jeep friends that could buy parts in a pinch if they had to.

When i had my jeep i never bought OEM anything! It was all parts store crap as that was probibly better quality than the shit that chrysler made. Good part is the toyota crap doesnt wear out. And i wasnt talking about like brake rotors and pads, i was talking like actual parts (seals, bearings, starters, shit like that).

And that's the reason why ended with a d60/14bolt. Parts are everywhere.
