not too long ago, going 10,000 between oil changes meant that you couldn't expect 20,000 miles out of the engine.

That being said, fuck em. It's mostly tree hugger bs. It's your truck and if you are confident the break in period has been met, then go for it. I don't see how fresh oil and more frequent changes will hurt anything.

at 253,000 mile and I've been changing the oil every 3000 religiously, I have no intention of changing that maintenance schedule.

If your oil has the additive in it already you are good to go, read everything though to make sure it has or does not have it. I added it to mine when I changed it a few months back

That's how I've been with my 4runners but I haven't ever bought a "new" truck till this one. So I was like WTF. 10k.

    .
they can't run synthetic on a brand new engine.
It needs Dinosaur oil for the breakin. :)

As far as synthetic running that long, that's your call. I only run synthetic in my Harley and that's just for the added heat protection inherent in the synthetic oil because it's an air cooled engine. It gets changed every 3000 too, although 5000 is the recommended interval.

And not everybody runs synthetic in their truck or car anyway. Being "new" doesn't mean it's a requirement to run it.

We do synthetic on our 4Runner every 4K religiously because it was said 5-6k..but 10k for me is like every 9 months..so I just thought I'd ask. I'll stick to a 5k max..and prolly just change it when it's near and I'm free

Hmmm I didn't know that. So you're sayin that they call for synthetic on my 14 corolla in the maintenance schedule, and they start with Dino oil then switch it to synthetic?? Well I learn something new everyday:D

That is not true anymore. They design the internals specifically to only ever run synthetic 0-20wt oils. Low tension rings and cylinder wall coatings make break in a thing of the past really. I still wouldn't go over 5k miles on an oil change, deposits and suspended particles still happen.

Well, that I wasn't aware of. Haven't bought new in a long time.
Being way too old school I guess. Still bothers me that oil with the viscosity of sugared Kool-aid is recommended these days.

This might have been a miss communication. Toyota only covers the oil change at the 10k interval (they only cover 2 oil changes). I have plenty of customers who change oil at 5k intervals, some 3k. Synthetics have better lubrication properties but the filtering is the same old deal it has been for years. Colorado drivers, if they use their car, meet the qualifications for extreme driving conditions, follow that maintenance schedule (Toyota just doesn't pay for that)
