And then there's those of us who took their trucks in who did not have significant rust-through (spent most of its life in non-salt belt states). Dealership sprayed that gunk all over the underside and it of course is already wearing away less than 2 years later. I am sure when this all comes out they will kindly tell me to get bent because they have already "addressed" the issue. You know I am looking forward to that day.

My 2006 taco didn’t fail the inspection, so the dealer spayed with the CRC, and it did a shameful job (covered only esthetically on the outside visible parts and over the flaking rust), and took the money from Toyota.

I am thinking to write to Toyota but don’t know if it will get me anywhere.

what's your opining guys? Is there any chance we can use the 12 year warranty?

I would just call the the toyotacare # or use the toyota care website and start a claim at least. Find out your in service date. I think one of my replies said march 17 letters will be out. I believe you get 1 more inspection out of Toyota.

You or a local mechanic you trust should do some looking and not take your dealers call on your frame.

My 2006 6 sped manual failed in October the state inspection. All previous campaings were done, I even did some rustproofing of my own in previous years. Now Is a big paperweight. Using space in my driveway. Frame is Rusted a fabricator around here did one patch, but another one was found, Well Toyota wont do anything.

So Iam now looking to sell my Corolla and get something not toyota. I am calling Monday the 800 number for the law suit to see what needs to be done.

    Ram 2500 or Chevy Silverado.

I might sell my truck in parts. Thinking about it. Iam no longer a toyota fan.

Worst part, the truck got the oil changed and greased at the original dealer were I bought it with 38 miles.

I've done some Googleing and the CEO for Dana, if still there, was a top executive for Toyota in Kentucky prior to Dana.

Dana settled with Toyota at 25 million.

    Toyota changed vendor in 2011.

What areas do you look for rust on the frame?

*edit Ok,went back and read and some of the rust comes from the inside out.

THAT is a great picture, and demonstrates *exactly* where this frame's weakness lies.
    I drew a red arrow on this one to show the path of the salty crap that flies off the wheel and murders the frame;

    Frame-rust.jpg

There are precisely TWO things that they SHOULD do to make this problem... not a problem.
    1) Get rid of that stupid hole in the frame rail at the back of the body mount.
    2) Add a rubber cap over the body mount access hole.

If those two things (and ONLY those two things) were done, then these frames would last "long enough".

They claim to be using a higher strength steel, and those kinds of steel tend to be a bit more resilient than weaker steel. HOWEVER, they also claim that the steel is *thinner*, so... rust slower, but there is less TO rust before it is shot.

This may not help all Tacoma gen 2 owners, but the class action lawsuit ( Brian Warner et al. v. Toyota ) continues in progress (covers Tacoma 2005–2010, Tundra 2007–2008, & Sequoia 2005–2008) having frame rust/rot issues refer to TW thread -

    "Toyota Frame Settlement Postcard"

also see - http://www.toyotaframesettlement - too many pages of legal discussions IMHO.

Settlement Fairness Hearing scheduled for Thursday, April 27, 2017. There are other deadlines for exclusion from the "class" should one be so inclined.

Mine passed the frame inspection and they did the CRC treatment on it 2 years ago. And of course it's flaking off all over the place. I looked at several trucks before I bought my current one because I had 2 other second gens that I'm sure got replacement frames by now. This one was really nice. So before all this frame inspection/replacement stuff began I used eastwood internal frame coating on the inside and KB coatings stuff on the outside. And installed the plastic plugs in the framerails they started using in 2011. And I fluid film the crap out of the underside every fall. Now the truck is paid for, I have always over-maintained it, still running/driving great, and I finally have it set up just the way I want it. I've had 15 Toyota trucks. I've always had at least one for the last 25 years. But I'm seriously considering jumping ship on my 05. For what I don't know.

Just got a letter (card?) about the website (http://www.toyotaframesettlement.com/)

Does this mean I should start a claim immediately, or that I have until the 12 year mark (2019 in my case) to open one?

I would hate to open one, get my frame inspected, and then have them tell me it's okay and just spray more crap on it. I want it fixed.

Got my postcard yesterday also. I bought the truck off a guy who took a few cans of spray paint and under coated the truck. So of course it looks ok at this point. Any suggestions on what I can do to make my salt state truck look like it did before? It's clear he didn't hit everything but it doesn't look that bad...my truck is an 2009

One of the checks they do is hit the frame in the bad area with a hammer, if the hammer goes through, then it fails and they order the new frame while your truck waits

They had my truck for 9+ months waiting for the frame to get replaced. And this was back in 2015
