Yeah there are some really nice covers out there. I'll be exploring all options before making any final decisions.

 

I had a LEER 700 on my 1st GEN was great looking and functional but I couldn't use the bed unless I removed it, that was the only draw back

 

I honestly don't need a pickup, I bought it because I loved it and well I wanted it lol. I'm OK with not being able to use it as a pickup since i'll very rarely need to haul anything. My opinion was always why put a cap on a pickup and turn it into an SUV when there re plenty of nice SUV options on the market? It's still always an option though, i'm not set on selling my Tacoma and not set on buying a 4Runner. I've already put $ into my Tacoma and of course i'll never get that $ back. Bedmat would come out, all weather mats can come out, all my LED lights and light bar can come out, the $ is really in the lift nd tires though. Unless I want to buy a set of stock size tires, put them on and remove the lift, that's all lost money.

 

that's the thing if you get rid of it you may take a $ loss, but then again if you wheel and deal you might break even either way getting a Toyota 4runner you are doing good also, so its a win win if the money end works for u

 

I had a cap on my old truck. First order of business was to remove it...Until I made the first dump run with a cap. It was nowhere near water tight but I could cram it full of garbage or load it up with firewood and not have to worry about losing the load. It was awesome. Taco needs a cap.

Well, I got it. 2017 silver SR, access cab, 4 cyl, 4WD, 5 spd manual. Convenience package... gots to have the cruise control.

I worked overnight 10 hours, left immediately after work, drove 4 hours to San Francisco, did the deal, drove 4 hours home, then stayed up until 2 am getting all my shit situated in the new truck.

Happy so far. I really had missed a manual transmission, so that's nice. Decently peppy for my needs. Comfortable.

Some nice little upgrades from the 2nd gen - the lighted front console, the lighted dome light switch, all the door buttons being illuminated, the clock not looking like a relic from 1982 (and having 24 hr time!). Seats feel better than the 2nd gen (and 1st gen) ones. I like the generally spartan appearance of the dash - like the current Nissan trucks, simple and uncluttered. Parking brake is better as a lever than a foot pedal but I kind of miss the iconic Toyota right hand / under dash lever.

I really don't like some stuff - the radio knobs, the 4WD / AC / vent knobs. The hill start assist seems to hold the truck just a millisecond not long enough so I guess I need to get faster on my clutch release. I'd rather have no hill assist than the one it has. The shift knob - WTF is wrong with that thing? Like they cut it in half and then glued the top half to the bottom but were off by 1/4". Still no light in the glove box or console. No inserts in cupholders.

Already have the following ordered: some HAM parts to get my radio installed, Hondo radio knobs and RAM mount, 265/75 16 tires, Salex console organizer. Gotta get tint scheduled, too. Maybe some fogs. Nothing else really comes to mind - I don't intend on lifting this and I actually like the basic steel wheels. Need to pull off the air dam / skirt thing.

I'm going to be listing a ton of stuff in the classifieds if anyone wants to get a jump on it: Big Sky shotgun rack, FJ Crusier D rings, dirt bike hitch hauler, bicycle hitch hauler, 4Runner roof rack cross bars, Yakima basket, OEM tires, recovery gear (D rings, snatch block, recovery strap, tree saver), Weathertech hitch bump-step.

 

Congrats! Would love to see pics, before and after any mods.

If I get one of those I'd probably replace the steelies. I'd leave the air dam on for hwy mpgs, and it is supposed to cut down on wind noise too.

If you don't mind me asking what'd they end up selling it for and what'd that run out the door?

I like a basic, no frills, but functional truck, so the steelies shall remain! Now, if I stumble on a good deal on some 2nd gen OR wheels, maaaayyyyybe I'd buy them. But I really am not a wheel guy.

I don't mind you asking at all. The truck was $27,190 which is basically exactly MSRP if you build it on Toyota's site (including destination charge and the few upgrades - rubber mats and convenience package. I've seen them for less but this was the exact truck I wanted, so I didn't see any reason to waste time and effort trying to save $700. They gave me what I wanted on trade, too; so I was okay with the deal. I can't really give you an OTD price without digging through paperwork - tax is 8% and there was a doc fee of $350, I think, so add that on there...? Because of positive equity in my trade and that money getting lumped on the deal I only have final numbers, I didn't note specifics for each truck exept for the actual price of the Taco before the deal began as noted above.

Not sure what to make of SF Toyota though. Nice enough people - no pressure or anything - but a weird dealership. It's downtown and is like an old multi-floor department store, they have like 8 cars on premises and everything else is in a warehouse, so you essentially have to make an appointment to see a car. A lot of car buying is "spur of the moment", guys walk in to browse and drive out in a new truck; and they are basically eliminating that entire component of customer. I did like the building though, it was cool to see cars get moved around on an elevator.

 

Ha, you're doing the same thing I did at first. Getting on the gas will cancel the hill start assist. Release the brake without touching the gas at all, and you will be held steady much longer.

Please keep us posted when you install the fog lights, I still can't decide yet on fog lights for mine. I also tinted the windows, removed the front air dam, up sized & upgraded the tires, Toyota tri-fold hard tonneau cover and added the maglite flashlight to the side of the drivers seat. I do agree with your dislikes, The lack of floor lighting etc. I have already started to source interior lighting up grade optioms.
Enjoy the silver, that was my first choice.
In Canada the SR is limited to 4 colours, Red, Grey, Black and white. The Canadian SR 2 wheel or 4 wheel drive includes colour matched wheel flares, Dark Satin Alloy Wheel and the convenience package.


The 4X4 is a manual and the 2 wheel drive is automatic.

I have owned a lot of Tacomas - 1994 (pre-Taco), 2001, 2004, 2012, now a 2017. I've been cross country in them and have a lot of great memories in them. They are basic, solid, enthusiast's trucks. I love them.

I wanted something new in 2015 and bought a used 2014 4R TE. I enjoyed it a lot... it is truly a great vehicle... but I just missed the simplicity and old tech of the Taco. Every time I passed one, I felt nostalgic. I've been looking at Tacos off and on for a few months, and after a lot of back and forth I had pretty much decided just to keep the 4R because of the amount of time and money I had in it... but I couldn't shake the interest in the basic Taco. Then I had a warranty issue with the diff needle bearings come up and I had seven hours of down time at the dealership to get pissed off at the 4R, and look at Tacos... and I just decided to pull the trigger. Wanting a Taco and being aggravated with the 4Runner was a bad combination because that's how decisions get made and shit gets sold, LOL. Once I made the decision then it was game on, couldn't unring that bell.

Doesn't hurt that the Taco costs less to insure, better gas mileage, more useful (I have no kids or anything, just me and my wife), has a manual tranny, and is less expensive so I am putting mire miney in the back every month and will have this paid off in 20 months.

Both are good vehicles but ultimately it comes down to personal desires, I guess.

 

@MeefZah Even though you went back to a Tacoma, keep posting on T4R, there aren't many people on there and we need all the help we can get!

 

I know this is alittle old but man that's a great color combo!

I went to the dealership last week and all they had were 2 silver SRs completely base. Their website shows a white one sitting somewhere...tho it doesn't have cruise/keyless (-_-)

May have to order one, unless they can throw in cruise control for free on their white truck(ill paint the stock wheels black until I can afford new wheels). Otherwise I'll go with a black SR AC 2.7 2WD.
