Decided to try the Alps Mountaineering tent.

Set it up and it's pretty big with the fly. Tried setting the stakes, but the ground wouldn't give.

    1230160930.jpg

Observations so far is it's roomy, pockets along the inside, two roof vents.

Getting the two poles into the sleeves on the fly might be a bit challenging if wearing gloves, they could've made the entire length of sleeve a bit larger since it's relatively hard to feed them all the way through.

I guess i need to plan a trip to test it.

Vintage (I think) Eddie Bauer Goose Down vest found at a garage sale over the weekend. It's in literally perfect condition, not a tear or stain on it. Trying to find out how old it is, is a pain in the butt.

It's sorta camping gear, because, reasons.

Yeah I was thinking it's a very 70s design. Doesn't fit me but fits the wife

I've owned Alps Mountaineering tents for many years. They all perform perfectly and look as good as new with proper care. Great product & value.

Okay, I'm not the hardcore camper/backpackers some of you are (but I'd like to be) and it's something I've always enjoyed. As I get closer to retirement I m really looking forward to more opportunities so I'm trying to get the needed equipment and gear in place for any opportunities that arise.

Got lots of gift cards for Christmas and today I used one to buy a new sleeping bag. Got The North Face Cats Meow today at a local place called Bear Mountain. It was not only $20 cheaper than REI, they had a 20% off sale.

Yes, used it. Hated it. It's a fuel hog. And it really ruins the camping atmosphere having an obnoxious light like that around.

i wonder about the stability of the tents with only the trekking poles for support - how do they hold up under windy conditions? i'd be afraid to wake up in the middle of hte storm with the tent collapsed on me and can't find hte door...

and what if you're setting up a base camp and taking day hikes? can you leave the tent set up but remove the poles without coming back to a huge mess in hte event of weather?

    Nope. Trashed it.
Not enough to be useful. Use a headlamp. Better life out of batteries. You light up what you need instead of blasting an area and creating shadows where you can't see a thing. You'll have to carry way too many fuel cans just for the light. It sucks them down.

I have a nice petzl headlamp that I use, I just like the idea of this lamp for playing dice or cards while camping, not for a utility type light

Some are better than others at it, of course. You usually have to use several stakes to get it taut and standing, but they seem to work well. And, this style is more of a thru hiking tent. I want to get a tarp tent for thru type hikes, and I'd keep my Hubba Hubba for other stuff.

It's suppose to do extremely well in wind, and I hadn't thought that far into the day hikes, most of my trips are hike thru, but a good point none the less

I haven't done this yet, but on my next trip I'm planning to take a solar powered garden light in my pack. We have some that put out a pretty good light.
