Tjm Pro Locker vs. ARB Locker

Looking to get a locker. Ive heard a lot of bad things about the ARB seals going bad on the bearing and pressurizing the diff causing fluid to be pushed out and seals to be blown out.

The TJM seems to get around this problem and be well built. Anyone have any advice? Seems like the ARB is still the go to locker of choice.

 

I scored a deal on a TJM Pro Locker at Summit Racing $661 for the 8.4 rear, sale is still up as of 1/2/16. I've been calling TJM USA from time to time for an update on the 8.0 clamshell front, spoke to them recently, ETA for the front is middle of 2017. I'm getting a little impatient for the front release because I want to take my truck to East Coast Gear Supply for the install. I trust them the most because if it wasn't for their invention of the front diff bearing most of us would not be lifting our trucks. I tried in 2006 and had to put it back to stock until it was invented. They did my 4.88 gears years ago, 700 mile round trip. I've also been checking out the Harrop Elocker available from Yotalockers.com $1300 for the front. I can't find the link or even know how to link it, but search the locker destruction test performed by a 4wd Australian magazine and link it here if you or someone else can find it. It was the best read on lockers I've ever found on the whole internet. The tested ARB, TJM, Harrop, and many more.

I'll check out the review. Did you go with the TJM because you got it on sale or do you think the design is better?

Interesting write up. All the negative things I've heard about the ARB have been long term issues, like the seals on the actuator bearing wearing out. Also I heard ARB is crappy and they make it difficult to get replacement parts. None of these things were "tested" on this write up.

After reading the test, the Detriot is seeming more interesting.

 

I like the air actuated design better on the TJM vs. ARB, it's external, but if something goes wrong with the TJM you still have to pull the third member just like the ARB. There's no removable diff cover like Dana axles. Another good thing about the TJM is if you opt to put the air compressor inside the cab there will be no fear of gear oil smell in the interior cabin, which I've heard can be a problem with ARB's. About the Rear Detroit, it adds more slack to the driveline. So with and auto trans shifting from park to drive you might feel the driveshaft thud, and with a manual trans you might feel the extra slack every time you shift. I didn't want the Detroit in the rear, I don't live in a place with much snow or ice (Atlanta) but that may not always be, I would like to transfer to Colorado one day.

 

I heard similar issues with the ARB. It seems they actuator design isn't as good as the TJM. hmmm. I'm on the fence. Can you swap the seals and o-rings on the ARB actuator without removing the unit from the 3rd?

 

The ARB has to be removed as well. By the way I have your ribbed tailgate skin and cap. It's the best one on the market.

 

The cross pins on the TJM are solid piece like a u-joint, I don't think the ARB is a one piece design but still very strong.

There is a thread of an aftermarket electric locker (front & rear). You should consider them too.

He must be talking about the Harrop/Eaton Elocker available at Yotalocker.com $1300 a piece, no air compressor needed.

 

Old thread but does anyone know if TJM is still making the pro locker for the 2nd gen Tacoma. I can’t seem to find out for sure, most links to it are invalid and TJM’s website only lists parts for the Hilux and Prado.
