Hello all I have a 95 3rzfe Tacoma that won't start. The check engine light does not illuminate when I try to start it. The engine is freshly rebuild. I checked the ecu by putting it in q similar Tacoma and worked well. I also replaced the fuse integration box in the cabin suspecting it was that. I don't know what to do anymore please help.

Please be more descriptive of what actually does happen.

When you say rebuilt, I'm assuming you mean out of the truck. Have you double checked all the harness connections?

Hey Bill, thanks for the reply! Sorry it was my first post ever. The engine was fully rebuilt due to a blown head gasket and water in the oil. The engine cranks over fine it has good compression I did a test. I checked all the connections everything looks right all fuses are good.

I did check for spark and got shocked while doing it. I plan on buying a timing gun just to make sure the distributor is giving good spark. I think it's more of an electrical problem just not sure what I'm not very good with electrical. Thanks for the reply.

Who did the build? I would definitely get a timing gun. If you got spark and firing right, only thing left could be fuel delivery

I did the build crank pistons and everything looked good just did it because it had 300k miles. I can smell the fuel and hear the pump coming on. it has new spark plugs as well.

Then I'd say timing. Not being an ass but are you sure it's not 180 out? I did that by accident on my old nissan

It could be that it's 180 off or maybe a tooth or two I believe I installed the distributor correctly. The timing light should tell me for sure.

Ignition timing could be fine. If number 1 is on the wrong stroke it's game over. I sat racking my brain for two hours when I did it. I then realized my mistake.

Are you smelling gas. If you are getting shocked, you should have spark. If you can smell gas, then it is getting fuel, just not igniting it.

What about the no check engine light when the key is turned to the on position?

If the distributor is off by 180 the timing light will still fire at TDC it will just be at the end of the exhaust stroke rather than the compression stroke, so it won't tell you anything.

If you pull the #1 spark plug, then rotate the engine by hand with your hand over the spark plug tube you can determine if/when it's on the compression stroke. Then check that the distributor rotor is facing the #1 spark plug wire.

Do you know if the rotor is supposed to be pointing at 12 o'clock once it is placed or is it supposed to be pointing at the number one plug? When I installed it I rotated the engine to tdc and air was blowing up the spark plug so it should be on the compression stroke?

When you installed the timing belt (or chain, whatever it has) did you have the crank/cam/TDC all squared up?

Valve timing is as critical as spark timing. If you have the valves open/close at the wrong time, pretty much nothing will happen.

And to find TDC, put a wooden dowel in the plug hole while the engine is turned by hand on the crank. When you hit the high point, both valves should be closed on the compression stroke.

I made sure to install the timing chain correctly and everything lined up just fine. I also hooked up my obd2 scanner and there are no codes.

Good. So we are back to spark, fuel and ignition timing. At least one is wrong.

IF it tries to run and 'chokes out', I've seen a clogged exhaust cause that. Failed cat, or even muffler. But I doubt that's your problem.

The cat looks alright but I will remove it and see if maybe then it will start.
