Anyone have any issues with their 3rd Gen overheating? Was sitting in the drive thru yesterday longer than normal and the warning light came on that my truck was overheating. I looked down and the gauge showed all the way to the right on "H", so I immediately switched off the AC and turned the heat on full blast to cool down the truck. I seared the forums and didnt see anything about this happening to 3rd Gens, but saw some 1st and 2nd that would have the issue. Ive only got 6k on it at this point so Im going to get it looked at, but just wondering what it could be.

I purchased my Gen 3 Tacoma in July of 2016 and have 6,500 miles on it. I have not had any overheating issues.

That's not good! Hopefully it didn't get hot enough to warp the heads or anything....only thing mine has done that I didn't like was my oil level low light came on while at a steep downhill angle off-roading.

Man I hope it didnt do anything bad like that, but if the heads did get warped, would I noticed that type of damage right away? Sorry, my skill level as far as auto mechanics is pretty low except for basic maintenance type stuff.

Toyota has been failing to fill fluids. That's the first thing I'd check. Otherwise my guess is it's a bad sensor.

Was it boiling smoke out from under the hood or did the gauge just say it was hot?

If it wasn't smoking or anything I'd lean with @smitty99 and say probably just a bad sensor

Nah, just showing hot, although I was looking at the hood to see if there was any smoke coming out and didnt notice any.

The truck cooling down when driving it or blasting the heat is not indicative of a sensor, nor do they typically happen to fail right in the conditions where you'd expect an overheat event to occur (idling in drive through, A/C going, 81 degrees, reliant on fan clutch)

Your fan clutch could be failing to engage and/or your thermostat could be sticking. More than likely it's an issue with your thermostat.

Yeah the fan clutch is what I saw as the issue or possible issue for the 1st and 2nd Gen posts on overheating.

I agree. Sounds to me like it truly overheated.
