Old post, but worth mentioning that 4wd will not help you stop.

....I didn't say it did, but thanks for reviving an old post with a silly comment.

Okay that's one I've never heard before....

So why do the front and rear both have the same gear ratios? o_O

I think some folks might be confusing the concept of limited slip differentials and front + rear wheel drive systems both being engaged.

Big difference between the two front wheels turning at different speeds (due to limited slip) versus the front and rear moving at different speeds.

Not even the same concept... one allows the vehicle to move properly while turning. The other would cause instant mechanical damage and destroy your tires.

Whoa bud, no need to get defensive. I'll remind you that you said "Do my rear wheels spin under normal accel, do I slide when I hit the brake? If yes to any, 4wd is on." As such I wish to dispel the idea that 4wd helps with sliding under braking. I agree with everything else you said.

And since you're new here, I'll let you know that posts updated less than 24 hours prior are hardly being "revived" with another post. I look forward to hearing more from you in the future though.

It's a traction test. Has nothing to do with stopping, low traction will cause wheel lock (or ABS activation) under braking. Anytime my vehicle has low traction I use 4wd. Nothing more

Your post is not wrong but irrelevant to my comment. Perhaps we misunderstood one another.

But I was wrong about the reviving. Was not getting the other alerts.

I see what you're talking about now, sorry I misunderstood at first. Yeah it seems to not send out alerts sometimes because TW occasionally doesn't subscribe you to a thread after you post in it even if TW is set to do so. Haven't figured out how to make it more reliable so I turned that feature off

In the manual it states that one should drive at least 10 miles every month with 4wd ON to keep the components running properly. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize that means it's okay to drive 4WD on pavement for a little bit each month so don't listen to those that say never drive 4WD on dry pavement.

Yes. But mainly in a straight line. If you have to make a turn. Put it in 2wd.

Correct, I wouldn't recommend parking lot usage to get your 10 miles in, but a main road with a speed limit sub 50mph.

What color is yours? I saw a MGM in the Renton area a while back with 4 runner pro wheels.

Mine is black with oem wheels. I do plan to get 4runner pro wheels one day (or at least those are at the top of my list)

Pushing in the clutch or putting the transmission in neutral won't stop the drive train from binding in 4wd in a turn on dry pavement. I noticed my truck almost didn't need the parking brake on a reasonable slope in 4wd on gravel, the binding kept it from rolling. I used the parking brake.

Maybe I missed it. Should you turn it on once a month to keep it lubed up?

It sure doesn't hurt and Toyota says to (at least it was in the owner's manual I read 9 years ago... or one of my other two Tacomas before).
