I'm looking to buy a third gen within the next week or two. I have found the pickup I want (DCSB-TRD OR with the manual) and am going to see if a dealer can do a dealer-swap for me and get it in. I live in the middle of no where and the closest Toyota dealership to my house is 150 miles away and there is a dealer 100 miles away from my work. (I do hitch work in the oil field every other week)

Question #1: If I buy a brand new Toyota and get it serviced at a private shop in my home town that can provide records, etc. will I have any issues with warranty work when needed?

Question #2: Would you guys do this? I'm doing some vehicle musical chairs at the moment and I have always wanted a Tacoma so I kind of figured now would be a decent time to do it.

The price on this pickup would be in the budget I want to be in so that is a go. I already sold my very expensive half ton to make room so that is a go. I don't tow a whole helluva lot and when needed my wife has a brand new Expedition and I have access to heavy duty pickups so that would be fine. If I own it a year or two and hate the midsize I shouldn't lose too much $$$ so that is fine. I guess the hang ups I am thinking on is how often I might have to make a trip to one of these dealers, if it breaks down I would have to tow it, and if this would screw with warranty at all... I plan to call the dealer on Monday and talk this through with them, but any advice/opinion would be appreciated. Thanks!

You can do your own maintenance yourself or have someone other than the Dealer do it, just keep your receipts and document everything.

You can have the maintenance done anywhere, records and receipts will make things easier should the need arise.
You get 2 years toyotacare which includes towing to the nearest dealer, so if breaking down and towing is a concern you are covered(however check the fine print, I am not sure if there is a distance max on it or not).

I recently bought a Toyota certified used 2016 Tacoma. It had low mileage and the dealer told me it was a dealer truck that was used as a loaner. It stalled on me yesterday and the dealership service guy said the stall was due to some after market wiring for remote start (which it doesn't currently have). Because it was after market, they said it wasn't covered and it'd be $480 to fix. Has this typ of thing ever happened to anyone with a used Tacoma. I feel like the dealer should cover it because it was Toyota certified!

First of all, why would a dealer truck used as a loaner have an aftermarket remote starter, then have it removed upon selling?
Next, the chance of it being a CPS failure is high, which would be covered under warranty.
I would look a bit further into the remote starter thing to see if it actually had one and why it was removed, then call B.S. on the diagnostics.
Did they tell you anything about any aftermarket stuff installed/removed when you bought it, because all that info should have been given to you.

I thought of that too. I'm thinking either the whole after market wiring thing is BS or the Arizona dealer lied when they said it was a dealer vehicle (which I'm thinking is more likely). I think the car was bought, then had the remote start installed, couldn't make payments, removed the remote starter, then sold back to the dealership. It only had 3200 miles when I bought it so it was basically new.

Pardon my lack of car stuff, but what is a CPS failure?

CPS is Crank Postilion Sensor. There have been a few members with the sensor fail, I think there was even a new design later on. I will see if I can get you some links.

I know these all have different questions, but I still find it funny.

Do you need to know, or care?
I agree with you. Not because it was certified, but because the dealer sold you a truck that already had a problem that they should have fixed before you drove off the lot. If that was indeed the problem, you can't expect Toyota to pay for the repairs, but the dealer should make right what was wrong when they sold it to you.
