I was wondering if anyone makes a slide in bed rack for the 2016 Tacoma. I have the Gator Tonneau cover and love it. But, I also want to get one of those truck tents (like Tepui) that fold open, and from what I am reading, roof racks on the Tacoma do not support the heavy load of the tent and the people in it. Max load I have seen is 500 pounds.

So that leaves me needing to get a bed rack.. Since my Tonneau cover is not easily removable but does fold up against the cab, I was thinking about seeing if a slide in bed rack is available, one I can remove very easily and fits like a glove so I do not need to bolt it down. If not, I will have one built, and it will be glorious!!

Actually, one other question. Why do roof racks on other vehicles support the weight of a tent and 4 people in it, like on the 4runners, Subaru's and other vehicles that do not have a bed?

@c4fabrication makes overland bars that are super easy to install and remove. Mine are getting powdercoated now. I think @CBI Offroad Fab makes one too. C4 rack is a mid height rack. I think 10 inches above the rail giving a low profile with the RTT. As far as roof racks, the roof is structurally designed to support the weight of the entire vehicle in case of a rollover. That is how the roof racks on a cab can hold > 500lbs

I did not think of it that way. Is there a roof rack out there that can support over 500lbs without messing up the built in bolts where the rack would mount to? Maybe that is the issue I was reading. The built in roof rack mount system might not hold over 500lbs, no matter what rack is on top...

No it won't. I'm not sure. I believe the max capacity for the roof rack factory is 100 lbs. or close too it. @zscott i believe, but he can tel you more. And probably @FronTRunneR racks. Not sure their @ name. I really like both and can't decide myself. I'm sure there are others but someone else can chime in.

I have had 500 lbs plus on my roof a number of times with no issues. Yes, the 6mm threaded holes are not ideal and 8mm would be better but there are 5 holes per side so any rack that utilizes them all will attach with 10 bolts. It spreads the load out pretty well and is pretty sturdy. Most full platform roof racks will support over 500 lbs.

Are there any racks that utilize all 10 bolts that you are aware of?

if your going to buy a frontrunner, i would suggest buying though @Pelfreybilt . They are great people, and super responsive. They are a dealer and use them on their personal vehicles. With that said, remember that @zscott did answer all of your questions and makes a great looking and proven product.

Mobtown offroad and KB Voodoo make bed bars for around $300 that are compatible with tonneau covers. KB Voodoo also make the sexy mid and full height bed racks that are compatible with tonneau covers as well and support RTTs.

I would link but I'm on mobile. You can look them up though.

Damn right. Use mine coyote/hog hunting off of, hauled 20' sticks of material on it (steel), kayaks camping gear, deer stands you name it. Can't beat it for the price.

I've got a BAMF low profile rack and love it. At first glance you would think it would be difficult to take in and out but it's really not hard at all. 4 bolts, lift and she's off...having a friend on the other side helps but you can stand in the middle of it and pick up with both arms and walk it out of the truck bed.

Thought I'd mention this so you didn't think you had to sacrifice load capacity to gain the functionality of easy removal your looking for.

Concerning the rated capacity of a factory roof rack, keep in mind that the rating is for a load while driving down the road.

A static load while parked can be much higher without too much concern.

The roof rack on my SUV is rated at 150 lbs but it has no issues supporting my RTT with me and the wife in it.

The static load on the rack is not going to be putting a constant back and forth pulling/pushing force on the tiny nutserts mounting it.

I have heard of factory roof mounts being pulled out when an RTT is mounted and the vehicle sees a lot of off road driving slinging it around.
