Mine was loud the first day I drove it. I didn't have a light bar installed and it was very windy outside. I installed the light bar and it is barely noticeable now. It hasn't been quite as windy out as the first day though.

That's encouraging. I'm hoping the majority of the noise and whistling is due to the gap. Hopefully others have a similar experience. My daily commute is 45 minutes each way at 75 mph. If I stayed under 55 it wouldn't bother me as much

Since purchasing this rack, numerous trips with it and some experience with the wind noise (minimal)
I knew from the day of ordering I would have to cope with some noise. What do you expect? it a big chunk of metal with all sorts of spots for noise to be created. Each trip I took i eliminated another small noise. The 1st cross bar behind the wind fairing is the major culprit with a very deep loud hum/vibration, you can see it vibrate without the fairing at high speed. That went away after both installing and adjusting my fairing to be flush with the 1st bar.

    These
    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00EZVOZYC
I have put on that bar AND the cross bar holding the fairing in place and has GREATLY reduced ambient noise. Other than that the only noise besides what you would expect from a rack like this is the small holes i have circled on my pic. From behind I taped them off with electrical tape until I buy some matching hardware to fill them. I found they were the source of a faint whistle which is gone!
Also, my experience with a 3rd GEN is the kazzzooo noise coming from the passenger and drivers side windows is, its NOT the rack!! lol
I was happy to find out it was not the rack, its the window seal and that has been replaced. So don't think it is and hate it.
Don't let wind noise stop you from buying or keeping this rack.

I purchased the fairing with no cutout and there is no noise that I can imagine a lighter would fix..
Did you buy a fairing with a cutout? Drop your crossbar below the cutout for now or remove it.

Yeah, the deflector has a cutout. My reasoning for believing the light bar would help is that it would protect the first crossbar from wind. Just as the fairing without the cutout does.

I'm very familiar with the door noise. That already bothers me. But it was tolerable. The noise now it's definitely not that.

I'm not sure what crossbar you're talking about to drop. I noticed your fairing is mounted lower than mine though (I used the two middle holes). Is that what you're referring to? I'd hate to remove the wind deflector altogether as it's one of the reasons I like the rack, but I may just have to try it, along with that cover you linked

This is how I have mine set up. Have people had better results with different placement?

    Cool colour choice!

Same as mine it's just that first bar after your fairing is catching wind cause of your cutout. If not using slots get those inserts or tape it off with electrical tape. Do you have sunroof? You can watch the bar vibrate heavily. I moved my first bar down, you can see the holes I used in that pic.
My wind noise is very minimal now, pay no attention.

    Wind noise report!

I ran several hundred miles this last week at freeway speeds, in a white out snow storm, and a bunch of glorious stuff.

My rack has the fairing without the light bar cutout.

    What I tried:

First install - the crossbar (holding the attached fairing) mounted in the two "middle holes" of the side rails. What I found:

    * Very, very odd (and loud) hum and vibration at about 35 - 40 mph. Once it started, the vibration lasted while braking. It really felt like the brake rotors were warped. Noise was pretty dramatic at 75 mph as well. I thought "uh oh......."

Second install - Panic. Pull the crossbar and attached fairing off all together. Result:

    * Whistle! The hum / vibration disappeared though. Thankfully. The noise wasn't as loud as the first install, but the whistle made talking inside the cab tough.

Third install - lower the crossbar (with attached fairing) to the lowest two holes of the side rail. Result?

    * GOOD. Drove several hundred miles after that, with wife and kids. Notoriously picky.... no complaints!

    Love this thing.

The lowest two holes do place the bottom of the fairing really close to the top of the cab. I'd like to put some sort of rubberized stripping along the bottom of the fairing on the rare chance they do make contact.

    Any suggestions?

Also, the logo cutout creates no noise. I've taped it off front and back with no change. Good, looks too good.

Ah yes. Forgot that one. I covered / uncovered the logo. No change in noise of that funny vibration / hum.

Glad too. I like the logo.

It's just the 1st cross bar. Inserts fix for good. The rack won't vibrate off anymore.. Lol

Decent video. I found leaving the weather striping in place while I marked the locations of the holes worked much better than removing the whole thing and trying to measure. So, I lifted the front out, marked the holes with tailor chalk on the roof, on either side of the channel. Then layed the weather strip back down and marked the rubber where my previous marks were. Then did the same thing for the rear and repeated for the other side.

When it came time to drill, I layed the weather strip on a piece of scrap wood that I could drill into. Trying to drill or cut something without proper support is asking for trouble

On my way to work today (1st drive with the rack), I freaked out wondering wtf that wooshing sound was! For sure I'm gonna do the trial and errors to see how I can reduce the wind noise and try out what you guys have recommended! I have the wind deflector mounted the lowest, nearly touching the roof, and it has a cutout for the lightbar.

Forget the drill, and the dremel tool. Mark your hole and punch it from the backside without cutting that extra bit out. Its even more fit and finish not removing that extra rubber.
