Hey @odomandr what group runs that HAM radio event in spring?

They also run Recovery classes (I went to one last year & we found a weather balloon wheeling after).

That closed system is just fine, when used properly.
Read that sentence carefully please, don't take it as me saying it's perfectly safe. It's not.
And don't take that out of context either. Read on.

I find it to be overpriced bling that isn't necessary for the safe use of a winch. The same company makes a hook, btw. And it's absolutely useless in the way it's designed. It's the size of a damn toaster. OK, maybe half the size, single slice.
But they do have printed on it that the opening of the hook goes up when in use. Kudos to them. However, it costs as much as a new HF winch, that will work just fine for recovery with nothing else added...

What some of the :beavisd:'s are overlooking is that a lot of consumers are buying it under the guise of "safety" (and the shiny) without actually knowing what the fuck they are doing. Winching is a "lethal event", doesn't matter what is on the end of the line.

There are quite a few I've witnessed that don't know how to use a winch beyond flipping the toggle switch. Not poking fingers at anybody, seriously, just what I have witnessed first hand.
I have seen some stupid shit, and the #1 comment I hear is, "I just bought it over the summer, spring, fall, last week, etc... and this is the first chance I have had to use one" :facepalm:That is fucking stupid.

Test your recovery gear before you need it. In the driveway is preferred, not on the trail.

Some think trimming the metal edge behind the fairlead is not necessary either. Even after the rope breaks and the edge has been discovered, but that's another story.:stirthepot:

Then there are the guys that think a relay or fuse, or circuit breaker is a good idea.
Right up there with the guys powering a winch off a battery side terminals. Don't do it, it will leave you stranded. There was a member on here, who has since left, that tried that, and found out first hand, that it doesn't work. It failed on him in the worst conditions too, snowing and cold. He posted his experience and wasn't happy. Apparently it worked just fine with no load, who would have thought adding a load would increase amp draw. It died as soon as tension was applied.

I've seen cable not in a straight line, but rather taking a path through the trees and boulders, in a random zig-zag fashion. This is a great way to create a shock load and break shit when it slips past those things under tension. Or just simply cuts the rope, or possibly a bystander. Plus the tree damage, they need a hug now.

Then there is the video, on this sight, from a member, spooling his line, and not wearing gloves. It's your hand, do what you want. Even rope can cause skin damage.

Can you see what I'm trying to say, there are hundreds of factors that come into play with winching and recovery. Not just attachment and flipping the toggle.

This doesn't make anybody stupid or moronic, although it may sound like i'm saying that, just uneducated in how to keep their fingers, hands, arms, legs, etc, attached to their body. If that's not important to you, then stop reading now if you haven't already.

That's the whole complaint, the lack of education when using a device (winch) that has lethal consequences, thinking that shiny bling (flatlink) will keep you safe. Because of marketing hype and blatant lies.
The device itself (flatlink) may not be dangerous, but the lack of education and misleading information could be.

The description the site uses for the way a traditional hook is used, is an outright lie designed to make the consumer open the wallet. I can't trust a product that blatantly lies in sales tactics.

Until people take an actual class, they have no idea what they are talking about, or what they are doing and are prolly putting themselves, and others, in danger and not even aware of why. Could be as simple as standing in the wrong place, not having anything to do with the operation at all. :)
One of the first thing's the class will teach you is how to place the hook, open side up.
Because winches don't come with aluminum bling. Although it's only a matter of time I suppose, because shiny sells.

Don't take a class that is sponsored by a company trying to sell you something.
Take one that is designed to teach technique only. Technique will save your ass.
Take the class, then buy the bling if you really want it.

Who else wants to Elect Old Brett as instructor for our recovery class and we all bring Factor 55's?

We can even do it up in his neck of the woods.
