However, Florida has some and so does LSU. Its not just a one team deal. There is at least one that I can think of that LSU should have probably had the natty, but they had to play Bama a second time.

His point was that the streak would likely have ended a few years ago if it weren't for Bama. He's not discrediting the SEC, just saying nobody but Bama has done it in the last 6 years

I understand that, but LSU was still a powerhouse in some of those years. My point is, had Bama not won the west, it quite possibly could have been some other SEC west team. Mississippi State was number 1 just a few years ago with ol Dak, and until Bama beat them, they probably would have remained that way.

I'm pretty nervous about that game... It could be pretty epic. Regardless of who wins, though, the loser will still have every opportunity to make the playoffs. A 1-loss SEC or ACC champ will still be in the playoffs for sure. Of course, the team will have to be perfect from then on out, which isn't easy!

Why do you want to relegate Bama's role in the SEC's streak?

I don't think any other team or combination of teams from the SEC could have filled Bama's shoes over the last 6 years. If so, it would have been like the 90s where it bounced between Nebraska, FSU, and Miami. Without Bama I don't believe the SEC would own 3 of the last 5 and be playing for 4 of the last 6.

I'm so excited for it. I'm 100% going. I know there is a good possibility we lose, but like you said, either team could still make it in even with the loss.

On a similar note to the above, who do you think will be the next major conference to miss out on the playoff?

    1. I'm not relegating Bama's streak, it is amazing. I'm saying that over the past 10 years, the SEC WEST specifically has been the best teams in the nation. Bama being the leader of that pack.

    2. You're reducing the amount of years from 10 to 6, which is a pivotal time frame when Saban's recruiting really started dominating the west.

    3. FSU vs. Clemson would be one game outside of Bama games that I would want to actually go watch in person.

yes, I know that they (osu fans) root for anybody who plays michigan. But in general they always want to see the other teams do well. I know they always get tired of hearing how great the SEC is.

We are all tired of hearing how great the SEC is (well, except for the people here with Bama Avatars I suppose :) ). I am really enjoying the fact that the ACC went 8-3 bowl games this year (including VA Tech 35-24 over Arkansas!) while the vaunted SEC went 6-6!

Technically, ESPN joked more about how laughable the SEC East is this year more than any other conference.

So, you'd have to compare SEC West teams vs. whomever.

But, in all fairness, the SEC West is down as well. The current coaching changes should right the ship.

I have no doubt the SEC will be back to form, sooner rather than later - that's why folks in other conferences, like the ACC, are enjoying this while we can! :)

Its just going to be a constant shift every so many years. ACC is certainly on a rise, as is the BIG10, where overall I think the SEC is in a slump.....but only to previous SEC success.

    Clemson is impressive.

Side Note: It took a Bama man to get it that way.;)

I am really looking forward to the game. Alabama's defense is awesome, but, then again, so is Clemson's. That said, VA Tech played Clemson in the ACC championship game and came very close to winning the game (as Clemson supporters know), so they can be beaten. Overall, though, I think Clemson looks better across the board right now, from a balance perspective, so I think they have an edge. If I were betting on the game, though, I'd have trouble putting any real money down against that defense of Alabama's.

Jalen Hurts and Lane Kiffin were Alabama's weaknesses.

I'm just referencing the fact that Bama is the only SEC team to win in 6 years and yes, recruiting plays a role in that.

My bad, I meant which conference outside of the 2 that have already missed a playoff? i.e. - ACC, B1G, or SEC

As much as I think everything is setting up for Bama to lose, I wouldn't put my money against them.

The real problem is 4 teams is not enough for a playoff, they need at least 8. Not only is that not enough to include all the majors, you also have the teams from the non majors who are sometimes really good (e.g. BYU) that end up either taking one of the 4 slots or being left out.

This has been discussed quite a bit. But at 8 teams, you'll have teams in the playoffs with 2 maybe 3 losses, which will kill the importance of regular season games, and conference championships.
