squel in reverse while braking

Alright, I have had enough of this high pitched squel when I am backing up and braking at the same time. It is a god awful noise that I want fixed. I have taken the brakes apart and cannot find the problem. Please if anyone has any suggestions, that would be great. I have a 04 toyota tacoma 4x4 DC. The only other problem that I have is the clunk that I get when i come to a stop. For that I am going to take apart and regrease it. Alright please have some ideas. I forgot to mention that I am stationed in Italy, so parts are limited. Thanks everyone.

 

Dose it ever make the noise when your off of the brakes and backing up or only when your on the brakes and backing up?

I can't say I know what is causing the squel, but have you gone under your truck and checked some of the drive components like the drive shaft, rear diff.? You may wanna try finding the zerk fittings and lube up your drive shaft. Check the torque of the bolts on your drive shaft to the rear diff., change your rear diff. oil and check the gears, rebuild your rear brakes, trans. oil change.

That may help out but also look and see if anything is out of the ordinary. Maybe someone else can chime in that knows more than me. Or just take it in and see what they can find.

 

Sometimes it's just a bunch of dust built up. Clean all the brakes really good. Hope that's all it is.

 

would you say its coming from the front or rear?

 

it is definatily coming from the rear brakes. it also does it when i back up and pull the emergency brake. So i know it has something to do with the brakes.

 

Im having the same problem on my 13'. Its def the brakes on mine, ive even replaced the rotors. On my truck its mostly coming from the front passenger side. Has anyone found a solution to this issue? Im almost to the point where im going to tear off the squealer to see if that helps. SOOOOOOOO Damn annoying!!!

 

Take the rear hubs of and spray them down with brake cleaner along with the shoes and hardware. Then take a pic of them and post it. Maybe the pads are bad, or a spring might not be correct.

 

So, you've have removed the drums to look at the shoes, springs, etc?

What side is the noise coming from?

 

On my post it was supposed say "its def the front breaks" I also stated its the front passenger side so ive done nothing with the drums. I know none of you can tell me what it is without looking at it but ive heard that toyota's are notorious for having brake issues. New Rotors - Really good shape pads not sure of the shape or quality of the springs

 

1. Make sure the dust shield isn't rubbing on the rotor.
2. Make sure there's no debris (like a pebble) trapped between the dust shield and rotor.
3. Make sure the pad squealer isn't contacting anything.
4. Make sure the anti-rattle clip isn't loose and it doesn't rub on the inside of the wheel.
5. Make sure pad friction surface doesn't have debris embedded in it.
6. Make sure the following are cleaned and well lubricated with brake grease or anti-seize:

• The back of the pads
• The back of the pad shims
• Between the pad and the pad shims
• The edges of the pad backing plates (that contact the caliper)
• The pad retaining pins

The e-brake only activates the rear brakes.

So the noise is coming from BOTH front and rear?

If its the front, then check for a brake pad that is worn down enough so that the 'wear indicator' is now coming into contact with the rotor. That will make an awful squealing noise.

^Yep, and he's got a 2nd gen, which has a different anti-rattle clip design.

 

I'm pretty sure you have brake pads that are lightly glazed. Think of pottery when it gets very hot, you can get a light glazing on brake pads. I just remove the brake pads. Lay some sandpaper out flat. Run the brake pads over the sandpaper in a cross hatch pattern lightly. ( Wear a mask.
The rear drums...Take a strip of sandpaper and wrap it around the drum. (as if you were polishing a shoe) Concentrate at the shoe's edge's to get ride of the sharp angle to get rid of squealing.

 

Sorry to just get back to yall. I originally thought it was glazing too cruisedon66 thats one reason why I replaced the rotors and when I replaced them I did make sure to sand the pads to remove any glazing that might have been on them. The only reason I didnt replace them also was because they literally had less than 5000 miles on them.
Kenlyns if it were any of the things you stated wouldn't it do it in drive as well? It just baffles me because it only does it in reverse. Ill try and go over everything once more this weekend and get back with yall.
