Question on my 2017 TRD PRO Just received.

I got my TRD Pro last saturday. It didn't sit on the lot longer than 2 hours. Would my truck have the transmission software update done already? Is there anyway to tell? Also, I can't get better than 17-18mpg currently. I'm feather light on the pedal. Will this improve? Climbing small hills (over ramps) drops fuel to 10mpg. I can only imagine what it will be towing something.

 

There is no significant "break in" improvement due to mileage...this is really a misnomer. Fuel economy depends significantly on your driving habits and the environment. The TSB has shown to provide mixed results for different drivers. Some say initial improvement then it reverts back to poor shifting/driving performance after several thousand miles. Some say it's good and it stays good. I think the "improvements" most notice are just people getting "used" to the way the truck drives. There are many threads and reports on the TSB, with no surefire easy way to check whether or not you have the latest software update or not. You may simply have to ask the dealer to plug it into the system and verify all updates have been done.

Your gas mileage sounds pretty close to normal for this truck. Look at Fuelly if you don't believe me.

City driving and Stop & Go driving kills the fuel econ on this truck. If you drive on a flat stretch of highway at 55mph, you're going to get great numbers. As soon as you start pushing over 70 to 75mph the fuel econ takes a nose dive.

 

You can verify the transmission software with an OBDII adapter + something like the OBD Fusion app.

I double checked after they did mine a few weeks ago just to be sure. You can see my OBD Fusion app below with the 7E0 and 7E1 ECUs showing "xxx300" at the end. That's the TSB Rev 1 software.

 

the problem with the MPGs is that the truck is calculated instantly per tank. It seems to confuse some people. You are probably doing a lot more city driving than you think, plus idle time which is ZERO mpgs. Most people see the MPG indicators on other vehicles that show last 25/50/100/1000 miles or the instant (the taco does have an instant "bar", but that thing sucks) and they think oh look I have been driving on the highway for x number of miles and I have got Xmpg. But that didnt count for the start up, idle to pull out of gas station, stop a light, gassing it to get up to speed on highway, etc. Once you learn the trucks habits you will figure out how to get better mpgs. But I will say this, you bought a pro. Dont worry about MPGs.

 

In regards to the Trans update I had the same question when I got my 3rd Gen, called the guy who sells me my Toyotas and he said it was good to go... Not trusting him he is just a salesman after all, I took it in and it needed the update.

If you do not have the equipment to check yourself doesn't hurt to call and make an appointment. I mean you did just drop serious $$.

May I remind people that the TSB is only if you experience issues. If your not experiencing delayed upshift, delayed P to D. Or any kind of transmission hesitations. It's not worth getting the flash. As far as MGPs your getting just about what everyone else gets. I average 16 - 17 so your doing better than me. Like @smitty99 said anything over 60 mph your going to have poor gas mileage. This V6 sucks guzzaline trying to push this brick against wind and up hills

 

The instantaneous fuel economy is too volatile to read into. My Subaru (2.5L 4-cyl compact car) does 5 mpg when I'm hard on the throttle, for example. Calculate fuel economy the old fashioned way: miles driven between fill-ups (as shown by the odometer) divided by gallons at the second fill-up. You should be fairly close to the EPA rating.

 

didnt really mean much other that if you bought a 50k dollar truck built for off-roading. Not sure MPGs should be a concern.

OP, my 2017 didn't come with the update. It came with the same software as the 2016's. It's not to say yours didn't as well, however VangaSTL is correct about the issues. Do you experience the listed issues on the TSB? If you do, you can ask Toyota to check your software and/or update it with mentioned symptoms. The update, to me, didn't have an impact on MPG. Having had a 2003 and a 2006 Tacoma (v6's), this Tacoma does have better mileage.

Local or freeway? I can only assume a Pro would have slightly worse mpg because more wind resistance (due to lift) than an OR or a Sport.

 

Yea I don't get it either. The guy acts as if we should all be experiencing the issues he sees. If we don't, we "lack situational awareness". He recently posted and maybe deleted something about how when he test drove his gen 3, it felt it lacked power but thought it would improve after breaking in. Really?? Magically the truck will gain HP??

He won't answer why he won't just get rid of the truck. Didn't he say he was looking at a Silverado?

I am just glad people are starting to stand up to his non sense. It would be one thing if he said hey, I have these issue, and just left it there. But to comment on EVERY post that we should all have problems like he does, is getting pathetic.
