Seriously, the truck has plenty of power. I think most just aren't used to the way it makes power..... which is at higher rpms.

You don't need a v8 to achieve what you want. You just need the 1gr-fe. You know.. the antiquated and underpowered 4L.

I agree that the 3.5 is a fine engine. Plenty of power without being excessive. Do you have the auto or manual? The manual trans comes standard with 4.30 gears. I drove both before buying and the manual felt much more powerful and fun to drive. So that's what I chose. I absolutely love this truck.

I'm just saying if Chevy can add 1000 pounds in a larger truck and have 400HP and get 20+ on the hwy so can Toyota.
My brother has one and gets better hwy mpg than my truck did stock.
Toyota can have a 4.0 or 4.6 is not going to hurt MPG very much or none at all plus we can have the torque we need.
Getting 300-330 pound of torque is all this truck needs to be a beast.
They are just meeting cafe regs and calling it a day, not building the best option for a truck...

Toyota could do a few things:
    1. Have a larger engine option
    2. have a lower gear option
    3. Have a high output option (off road, sport and pro could have + 20-30 hp)
    4. Unlock the computer for tuners like on the FRS
But I know Toyota won't do any of that but they may increase the power a little.

I have the auto . I wanted the DCLB OR and it is not available with a manual . I am happy with it now with the 3.90 gears even though 6th gear is useless , if not harmful to the drivetrain for lugging (with stock tires) .
4.56 would be much better but It is not worth $1500 or more for the gears to me even if they were available . Especially while under warranty .

While I find that difficult to believe, my 4-cyl uses about 67% as much fuel as your 6 does. Or should I say, as a 6 would under the same driving conditions that my 4-cyl gets.

I've owned a GM truck (6-cyl), and you know something funny? The lowest fuel consumption it ever got was while hauling it on a flatbed BEHIND my Tacoma. The Tacoma burned less fuel DRAGGING it (22 mpg), than it ever got driving all by itself (18 mpg).

Of course, that is apples to oranges comparison. I'd challenge you to drag a GM behind your 6-cyl and still get 22 mpg though. I'm pretty confident that you can't.

new age man... newer GM trucks shut off half the engine on the highway. I easily got over 20mpgs every tank in the Sierra 9k miles. Yet to hit 20 in 1300 miles on my Taco best I have gotten is 19.2.

The gen 3 gets good power at high RPM yes, but remember, engines don't breath as efficiently at high RPMs so when you want to dip into that power, you get horrible MPG. Larger displacement engines get you your power at low RPM and they are usually more efficient in that range.

    That's only partly true.
It doesn't physically disconnect half of the engine, it just shuts down the fuel and spark, and probably opens some valves to reduce resistance. There is still drag from all the extra cylinders.

And on top of that, half of 8 is still 4, so it will never approach the fuel consumption of a 4-cyl.

FWIW: I've NEVER had as low as 20, and that includes tanks that are exclusively some combination of pulling heavy trailers in the city and snow plowing.

besides a lot of guys say that causes problems in the long run.
I know a few guys I work with that have GMs with that and they hate it. You only get the notification on the dash that its running on 4 if you have the highest trim model, and its only at certain speeds.

That being the case they hate it since they don't get the notification and they end up in 4 not knowing, and then the engine doesn't wear the same. I've heard from a lot of people including one of my friends who works for GM, that its really not the greatest system.

Add in that it is always the same 4 cyls. that shut down . How long do you think that will last until the other 4 have more wear on them carrying all the load ?

I had a 2000 Tundra with that motor and it was really great. It was almost exactly the same size and weight as the new Taco. I towed an M3 race car, tools, tires and supplies on a steel trailer all over north america with no issues. If I could have it again in the Taco with a 6 speed manual OR 4x4 I'd have bought it. That said - no complaints on the new mill either. If you spin it past 3500 RPM it's got some heart. I'd almost prefer to keep the 3.5L and have the truck be smaller. I miss my 80s sized Toyota PU.

This isnt 1995 anymore. This is a proven method. lots of GM trucks with 200k plus with zero issues.

GM trucks do last a while, but Tacoma fanyboi's cant handle that statement. Not saying you guys are. Just saying, Toyota isnt the only quality brand.

    Meh.
Every brand has their own known issues.

    Toyota has frame rot
    Dodge has transmission
Ford has everything (truthfully they're probably one of the better of the 3 currently)
GM has its own issues as well.

When it comes to gas engines I'd rather toyota, or dodge.
But diesel I'll take a cummins over anything else.
Other than my uncles 2010 Sierra 3500 denali he had, I've never been a fan of GM, his silverado he got after the sierra was a heaping pile of steaming shit. 2013 2500 duramax. He kept it for a year and it was just a piece of junk, traded for a 2014 2500 Cummins, loved it but was too much for what he needed so traded for a 2015 ram eco diesel and loves it.

A lot of our company trucks where I work are fords, they're really not bad, as long as they aren't the piece of shit eco boost that we've had so many problems with.

I agree , there are reasons to buy each of the brands , also reasons not to buy each of them . Its still all a crap shoot as to if one gets a good one or not .

I think adding a v-8 to this truck would add depth to it overall. However, I would much rather have an inline 2jz 6 cylinder with a single turbo, or a small 4 cylinder diesel. On the diesel front I don't care if Toyota farms it out to Cummins or builds one in house, just get it done, truck guys love diesel power. Wouldn't it be nice to hit peak torque before 4k rpm? It can be done!
