Mine was similar on my 1GR. Nope. Then there were mufflers. Lol.

Been tackling the little issues lately, starting with the transfer case confusion. I found that the t-case that came out of my Hilux surf is an AWD t-case similar to the one found in 99-00 4runners, with a center diff that is locked by moving the shifter into the "H4" position. "H2" is basically AWD, where the center diff is unlocked. The 4WD computer, which is still for a H-N-L4 push button T-case, doesn't know when to lock in the front ADD system, so you end up just spinning the front (open) driveshaft and don't go anywhere in "H2". I'm think I'm going to go back to the regular 2WD/4WD j-shift t-case for simplicity and compatibility with the current 4WD computer.

For the tach, I figured out that the signals were incompatible, and wired in a Dakota Digital tach converter. I used the settings for a "2" cylinder engine and "4" cylinder tach to get it to read right. The tach sits nicely at about 650-700RPM, which is right where the manual states it should be.

I also fabbed up the rest of the 3" dump pipe. I added a wideband bung so I can keep track of AFR's when I go to mess with the fueling and timing of the motor. The welds aren't pretty, but I'm using a Harbor Freight fluxcore welder so it's about the best I can do.

First 2 tanks were only about 20 MPG, which includes lots of cold starts and city driving. I expect this to improve as the engine breaks in, and after a bit of tweaking of fuel and timing.

Next on the list is to get the new t-case put it, and start building a battery box.

I was wondering what that little unit was, it looks like a Koyo PLC or some other simple PLC.

I think it's just a digital waveform scaling box. It reads a frequency in, then sends a scaled frequency out based on your settings.

Update on the transfer case situation. Turns out that the plain, 4WD/2WD j-shift t-cases are way, way shorter than the AWD, "multi-mode" j-shift that came with the diesel, so my fancy custom driveshafts won't work with it. :/ I guess I just run the AWD case. I think something is stuck inside of it that's preventing it from going into true, 2HI, where the front shaft doesn't spin at all.

AWD Tacos are fun. I'm tempted to swap in a Manual transmission FJ Case into mine for it.

Bumping this thread since @anothernord gently nudged me towards it from another thread.

    Impressive. Most impressive, indeed!

I can only wonder what would be possible to do with a 2nd Gen for a diesel swap... I supposed if you weren't constrained with worrying about it be Toyota, had oodles of cash and time then the possibilities are limitless.

Hope the work on the truck has been going well and definitely interested to see how things progress further...! Nice work, man!:bowdown:

    Thanks guys!

I've discovered why the engine sounds so ...airy. There's a massive leak in the intercooler somewhere, as confirmed by the idle jumping while spraying starter fluid around all the air pipes. I'm working on getting my FMIC coupled into the system. I have all the pipes made, but am waiting for silicone couplers from eBay. Then I'll actually be able to show acceleration and driving videos without a deafening air leak noise covering up the sweet diesel putter.

Good find. Noise improvement will be had, as well as some engine performance. What is the size difference of the FMIC?

The FMIC is 24x8 or something. Check out my HE351VE turbo build thread to see pics. I'll update this thread soon when I get it all installed.

I am finishing up the wiring for my multi mode tcase. I look forward to having AWD plus standard 2/4wd.

From what I can tell the 99-02 4runner multi mode tcase are all the same, just two different ways they are controlled (99-00/01-02)

I kinda thought the multi-mode J-shift cases didn't have the electric actuator on the back of the t-case and the multi-mode with the H - N - L4 lever did. Is that not true?

The 99-00 2wd/4wd shift triggers a switch and the ecu spins the motor accordingly.

I thought the same thing also, however I was Wong. The ECU needs to control the 4wd shift fork because when you shift to AWD from 2wd, the tcase locks first, then the add motor locks, then the 4wd shift fork travels more to unlock the center diff.

Here is a video of my multi mode (99) working with a 01-04 electric ADD motor. At the time I didn't have the correct shift tcase knob, so I was using a standard H-N-L knob.

    https://youtu.be/xSTBjZFeuKI

At the 13 second mark I hit the 4wd button. This activates AWD. You can hear the tcase lock into 4wd, then the ADD motor engage, then the tcase release the Center diff.

Great info, I will most likely end up doing the same thing. Did you just get ahold of the 4WD computer for it and wire it in separately?
