Toytec coilovers. Height adjustable Bilstein's. 265/75/16 MT. TRD wheels. Rebuilt r150f. Marlin clutch kit. All kinds of new parts...
Had the same exact thing happen to me. "Can't align it because rack and pinion is bad." Holy crap expensive part. So... I replaced all ball joints, tie rod ends and took to another alignment shop. They aligned it and didn't say anything about the rack and pinion being bad. I might replace the bushings in it with the energy suspension ones but yes - watch out for that. Shops are natorious for doing that.

I'll let the professionals give their opinion, but I think it could be valve cover gasket leak. Not sure

I would use some good engine cleaner and clean the crap out of your engine, then let it idle for 5-15 minutes and look for the leak.

Make sure to read the directions on the de-greaser. Some say have engine hot, some say have engine cold. Depends on the chemical. And be careful with the pressure washer tip. Don't let it get close to any seals or gaskets. A pressure washer can blow out a seal or gasket if you hit it right.

    Good luck with your suspicions!

I had the same issue(s) and kept trying to avoid being screwed. Turned out that the original shop was right - I did need the rack. Only after 5000 additional miles of trying to get the alignment and leaks corrected did I bite the bullet and get it done right.

I used to be in the repair (not cars) business and I called it the way I saw it. When someone thought I was ripping them off, I didn't argue - didn't need the hassle and frankly didn't care that the customer was too cheep or too cocky to do what needed to be done.

My 1st gen needed a rack and pinion, as the tie rods were seized and proper alignment could not be achieved. Several tires were damaged before I could figure that out. My mechanic and forum member Jace, recommended "The Rack Doctor"
    http://rackdoctor.net/

Lifetime warranty, and great peeps to do business with.

What! Sized tie rod. I don't know what that means. Please explain why this required a new rack.
