    Dog, camper.
It could break when pulling or cause damage to either or both vehicles when the slack is taken up.
The idea behind the strap is soft recovery using kinetic energy.

if you watched that video posted a little way back Can you imagine what would happen if that strap was a chain.

I didn't have a chance to watch the video yet, but I'm sure the chain could do a ton of damage if it went crazy. I just wasn't sure if a chain would be more likely to break vs a strap.

    Maybe nothing?

I think what makes a good snatch strap is that it stretches and doesn't put such a shock load on the connection points. The energy that goes into stretching the strap then "snatches" the stuck vehicle out.

If your rope, chain, whatever, doesn't stretch at all then it shouldn't have any recoil if it breaks.

Am I talking out my ass @BDN ? Or is this right?

Hmmm good point... but with a butt load of tension on it wouldn't it snap back?

for straight pulling/towing, a chain would be fine. Both strap and chain have the ability break, the strap just causes little to no damage.
You are correct, a chain generally breaks and falls to the ground, then you pick up the pieces of chain and spit out the chipped parts of your teeth.
A chain can still have some recoil though, or broken links can still fly.
