You bet, I meant to add before posting that a chain is fine for towing, but the strap is still better, not as harsh when starting from a stop and the same for when the towed vehicle is doing the braking.
But, chain will outshine strap when using you HiLift for a winch. Strap will still be stretching about the time you run out of stroke on the jack.

Always, absolutely. But you may still need a little run at it.

Isn't there a difference between a tow strap and a recovery strap?

I would say yes. Can't think why not.

And just so I feel smart, I'll add something.
I think it's probably a bad idea to winch with an automatic in park. Like if you were trying to winch someone else while your vehicle stayed stationary.
I've seen lots of people do this with the transmission in park and it seems to me like you'd be putting an awful lot of strain on the parking pawl in the tranny.
Better to put your vehicle in neutral and stand on the brake.

    Am I wrong?

All makes sense. I didn't think about the stretch and elasticity of the strap. I'll make sure one makes it into my recovery box.

Also I agree that we should have a meet up with some classes if you or anyone else would be willing to teach them. Side note- I saw a guy at the Toytec meet that does that as a business. Sounds pretty sweet. Especially if there's beer. Beer makes better choices.

Since it's all recovery talk right now. I'm curious about the video posted of 2nd gen to 2nd gen reverse extraction out of the snow bank. I kept cringing every time it went taught and was watching his front end.
Suppose you "were" trying to break the front ring gear or cv. Would this be about the hardest thing you could do, except maybe try jerking a tree.
It looked like there was some give in the strap and I realize the tires weren't binding in the snow. Was just thinking wouldn't it be better for the puller to turn around if possible?

Last weekends snow trip when @teamhypoxia was burying his truck in that dense drift, I was able to back him out of most of the time with just a short run. When he was really buried, it took a couple big yanks. Really didn't feel much in the truck though, kind of like being on the end of a big bungie.

I'm baffled by the beneficial content in this thread as of late.

Been dumping up here the last couple days. I'm just stuck behind a desk looking at it and not up on the mountain...

Step one is to learn how to make a proper pile of firewood, such that there's enough fire for beer drinking and BSing/seminars. :D

Better to ask what I have not done.
No same thing. I do prefer the straps like arb sells for longer towing jobs and i use my conetic rope for most of the yanks, the rope does better with yanks do to how it can "flex" under the pull. This give it more room to bungee to produce the actual tug it takes to pull a truck out. The strap only has one major way to flex because its only 1/4 inch thick in one direction.
