Flying a L-19 is not hard. Although I found out that a split S takes more altitude than I thought.
I was a pinch hitter. But I had the airplane. The ground was coming up fast.
It did not have a G Meter. I had ordance on the hard points. Which helped me.
Flying a UH-1B is fine until you hover. Then it is like juggling while standing on a beach ball. A LOACH is easier.
I an ABN, Ranger, SF, Inf. Patrols are really my best job.
I am also an Army Aviator and a tail hooker. USS Kittyhawk CV 63.
    Another story.
I do have friends and get around.

Awesome CB setup, TRD leaf springs, matching camper shell...more to come some day.
L-19?....as in the cessna? I didnt know that you could do a split S in one of those....I sure wouldnt try, I would think you would break the wings off!

The Bird Dog started as a Cenessa 305. The Army modified it quite a bit.
I am here to say it can be done.

Depends on how much more gas goes up...LOL.

It'll prolyl run you in the neighbor hood of 4 grand to get a private pilots license. It's abou 30-40 bucks an hour for ground training and 120-140 for air time.

The 235 burns 13 gals. per hr. The 140 burns 9 GPH.
You can fly cheaper than that. Talk to the EEA about sport planes and ultra lights.

I'm paying about $6700 total for my private pilot. It includes:
    50hrs of plane rental,
    Instructor fees,
    Ground school fees,
    FAA Written Exam Fee
All Pilot supplies, (Headset, books, maps, plotters, Electronic E6B, etc...)
FAA Class III Medical Exam Fee
    Private Pilot Check Ride Fee
It includes absolutely everything to get your license.

Anything a lot less they aren't giving you the entire picture of costs required.

I gotta say, I agree with this point!!! I would not want to get an actual engine failure, but if I did, I certainly wouldnt want it in a helo!

Engine failure was common not so many years ago.
Yeager or Hoover dead sticked a F-86.
    Not recommrnded.

Autorotation really isn't that bad- I've been in a helo doing practice runs auto rotating down. I'd rather just not have a failure to begin with- but it's not THAT bad in a helo.

Hey, here is a question I never really thought of until now but....

Do helicopters experince ground effect? I mean aerodynamicly speaking I suppose they do, but can you really notice like you do in a fixed wing?

I was shot down in a UH-1B. When the golden BB hit the tail roter, we had some rotation.
I was sitting on the skid and had no part of the aviators bringing it down.
It would scare you. If you still had the capibility.
    I had long lost that.

Yeah...Auto-Rotation isn't bad...Getting shot down is NOT typical auto-rotation. If you get shot in any part of the helo you run the risk of damaging parts that are crtical for auto-rotation.

On another note- solo'd for the first time today. =)

Many years ago I got 5 hours of flight time. Flying from Ga to Virginia. :plane:
I was moving a friends(Carl) cessna 182 skylane, he was certified. He was also getting over the flu, so he let me pilot the whole way. Making 2 stops along the way.(I had flown quite a bit before this with another buddy in his commanche. But the time didn't count). Carl gave me 2 pieces of advice for begining flyers: "You can never have too much fuel on board, unless you are on fire!" & "If the engine ever quits at night. Drop down to tree top level, flip on the lights, if you see trees turn-off the lights!"

I was worn out and slept all the way back to Atlanta on Delta that afternoon.

yeah....i had an instructor tell me that once....if at night, you are about to land and you dont like what you see....turn the lights off :)

Of course in the T-34 if we ever have real night emergencies, we would probably just bail out.

Crazy, my instructor told me that same exact thing.
