I am aware Im likely going against the grain in this forum but I just purchased a new 2017 Tacoma TRD Off road. My mistake started when i ordered my new truck without ever driving a new tacoma....ok, not the smartest move. But since i own a 2004 Tacoma TRD with 185K which i love, i fully trusted Toyota. I must now say i like my 04 much better. My new truck is like driving a video game with NO feel of the road. Also, the transmission sucks, it is constantly shifting, does't know what gear to pick, sorta reminds me of my exwife. The driving position is terrible, sort of like sitting on the floor with your feet straight out in front of you. The MSRP on mine was 35569 and about shit when i noticed it doesn't have a built in garage door opener...not a big deal but you would think in 2017 they would all have this option. I only have 200 miles on the new one, sure hope it gets better over time. in the mean while i agreed with my wife i would sell my 04 once i got my 07...now not sure to get rid of the 04 or 17 or her. I'm aware the last two options would be very expensive.

It gets better. Transmission will learn your driving style. Drive it like an asshole for the first 2000 miles and you will be fine.

Also use the ECT button. Its a poor mans sport button.

I didnt like the transmission in my 2016 at first but I have gotten used to it and find I cruise everywhere now. Yay for no speeding tickets.

Keep them both, Sorry I can't help if you think you made a mistake but when I bought my '14 I was underwhelmed with it and decided against selling my '03. I hated every time I drove my '14 so when the 3rd gen was announced I traded the '14. I just put new shocks after 195,000 miles on the '03 and still love driving it. I also love every time I get in my '16.

Do yourself a favor and take the negatives here with a grain of salt.

Just got a 17 TRD OR M6. Sold my 07 TRD OR AT...kinda missn it.

I agree about the seats, no garage door opener and road feel. Sux!

Only 200 mi on the new one and the biggest disappointment for me is the throttle response. I can blip the throttle to the floor and the RPM's barely move at all. I noticed it on the test drive, but I assumed it was computer regulated on the new engine until xxx amount of miles are on the vehicle. BMW has a similar feature on some of their new cars where the motor/trans are detuned for the first 1200 miles. After much searching...it's clear the AT people hate their trans and the M6 folks hate the drive-by-wire system. I also find the reverse gear location on the transmission to be somewhat inconvenient. I got caught at a light not paying attention and the person behind me honked to let me know I had green light. I quickly threw the shifter left and up to get into 1st...except i went into R and almost backed over the guy who honked at me.

Still love the truck and I'm a loyal Toyota owner, but I feel like Toyota dropped the ball on some of these issues. We shouldn't be having QC problems on brand new vehicles.

BTW...your garage is bigger than my house.

I haven't driven the 6MT, but the positioning is the same as my VW was. Does it not require downward pressure to engage reverse gear like every other car with this configuration?

Not the OP's truck, but it is a first gen with the 3rd gen ORs. First gen guys have to do whatever it takes to keep from looking like total losers.

Do you need to know, or care?
Might as well ask, cause it's coming out soon anyway, how's the acceleration? Do you hate waiting for 3000rpm, angry about pressing that gas pedal too hard? Not enough torque?

People used to buy vehicles base on brand loyalty all the time, so that's nothing new. You would think the company would offer similar, if not equivalent, quality with a few more bells and whistles each progressive year/generation. I guess that isn't the case anymore. You have hardly put any miles on it, but it is already used.

You should just keep it and see if it grows on you. You may end up liking it more. The Gen 1 is definitely unique in an excellent way though. Buy your wife some flowers or chocolate or something and talk her into letting you keep both until you decide.

Just keep it OP, you would be crazy not to... Unless you absolutely dread driving it every day.

Something else to add... you may just be in the buyer's remorse phase, which any non multi-millionaire with any sense should be after a big purchase. That's normal, we've all had it. Once you get over that, I bet you will like it more. Until then, just enjoy it.

Just for the record I think think my 17 is a great looking truck. Hopefully it will grow on me over time but I still love my first gen. I have never posted on here before and still don't know what a troll is. But thanks for the few of you for your replies. Some of you have some serious issues. Also, what does OP stand for?

He does indeed. And 2004 > 2017 in Tacoma math. ;)

Keep the first gen. Or send it my way. I'll take two pre/1st gens over a new Taco any day :)

Also, getting rid of the second two may cost a lot up front, but they won't bleed you dry for life. Haha
