1) Don't lug the engine it won't shudder. Not trying to be a smart ass but this engine likes to rev it is not like the Toyota engines of the past. Down shift and give it hell.

Edit: noticed yourin cali so it may be hard for you... My truck runs like shit on E10 fuel so if you can find non ethanol fuel buy it. Your truck will run better and you will get better mileage.

2) I had the howl. There is no official fix for it as of yet but having my third member replaced solved it in my case. Others have not been so lucky.

 

Yes exactly. Thank you. I see the invoice and MSRP on this forum for the 7545 and their dealer quoted price is ridiculous!

 

Ordered mine and waited 6 months for it paid $250 over invoice for it.

 

I have '17 manual as well. I do notice the truck shudders when in too high a gear and it's lugging, but I don't consider this a problem. I driven manuals all my life and they have all done that. Why not just make sure you keep the RPM's up and keep the truck in a lower gear? I usually rev it out above 3k RPM between gears and I tend to cruise at 2500 RPM. The truck just likes to be at higher RPM. It feels great if you do that.

I don't notice the rear diff howl either, but honestly, I'm not real sensitive to vehicle noises so it could be happening. It'd have to be really loud for me to notice probably. The good thing about te diff howl is that it's a known issue, and I believe there's a TSB. Just mention to the dealer next time you're in for service.

 

All manuals do this. If lug --> downshift.

I also notice the rear end sound. It's not really a howl, but more of a wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo. If it bothers you, slow down or speed up, until there's a fix identified.

 

Well, I've been driving manuals all my life, from turbo charged vehicles to N/A ones, and last truck was the 2.7L 5MT PreRunner.

I shifted at lower RPMs and NEVER did I have an issue where the truck would stop the fuel pump for a moment then catch back up again.

It would make a low growl from the engine, but that's it. I just noticed it on my road trip, here in Utah, and Yes, I've been fueling up with Ethanol Free when ever I can.

I'm calling it. There's an issue. Not sure if this is the start of faulty CSPS. I'll keep an eye on it.

I've been driving this truck like I have from the get go, and now with 2000 miles on it, it's starting these weird quirks.

 

You should watch the '16 Tacoma review by SavageGeese on Youtube. He talks about the fuel cutoff thing between shifts. He drives the automatic, but notices it does the same thing you're describing. I honestly haven't noticed it doing that.

Just curious what you define as "lower" rpm. I have had bog/stutter, but it was only when I was severely lugging the motor. Changes in road grade, throttle position, etc... all make a difference on how bad the engine lugs at a certain RPM. Not saying you don't know that, but your days from driving Turbo cars should have you ingrained to keep the RPM's up when applying throttle. Again, not saying you don't know this. Your clarification might help us all.

 

Just picked up my MT today. First Taco since my '01 4 banger 5MT. Didn't notice lugging at 2k rpm. You seeing it lower than that?

lugging in almost any motor is from not operating it right, as you probably know. having said that i can lug mine easily if i want to when it's under 2k. but this motor needs throttle when releasing the clutch at idle, so i give it some throttle. i haven't really lugged yet. but I'm at about 2k miles only, so..

 

It needs a little throttle to get moving, but compared to a lot of other manuals this truck is way easier to get moving (and way more difficult to stall). Not sure if that translates to harder to lug, but just an observation of mine.

 

Mine pulls smoothly from 1500 rpm...

 

@AdventureKid now that you have explained it as cutting out, I concur. Mine has done this from day one. If I mash the throttle between 1500 and 2000 rpms I will occascionally cut out and hesitate before it takes off. Strange thing is I can not duplicate every time and for most of the summer months it did not do it at all. I would like to know the cause.

 

Exactly. I just noticed this in Moab, Utah, on my first trip to some decent elevation, compared to sea level at home.

Not sure what the heck it is, but it's really frustrating. 1500-2000rpm is exactly where it happens. It even happened in 3rd gear, mostly 4th+.

Never happened in any other M/T vehicle ever owned. Grrrrr!!!!!!

 

Mashing the throttle or going WOT below 2000 RPM is lugging the motor too much. These trucks aren't geared for that and at 2000 rpm you aren't even close to the powerband on this truck. Downshift before mashing. These trucks love the rev's.


Side note, most trucks have a heavier flywheel to reduce stalling and maintain revs while shifting. Some of the delayed response from the vehicle that people are noting could also be that. The affect is more or less noticeable depending on what you are used to driving i.e. cars, performance-cars, or trucks.
