Just got a call from the dealer. They tell me that the bolts on the rear diff came loose and the oil leaked out causing the rear end to lock up. Really? How could the bolts come loose?

I think that I did hear a howl this morning as I started the commute. Didn't know what it was.

I was going straight at about 55mph and I heard a loud noise the rear end started to slide right. This is a TRD sport, 2 wheel drive. The rear wheels stopped turning which is why the car slid.

Being old and lived through a time when I drove junk cars, 'cause that's what I could afford, fluids leaked all the time. That got me in the habit of routinely peeking underneath to see how much of what leaked out last night or anytime it had been sitting for a while.

I don't do it as frequently as I did then (there are a number of things I don't do as frequently anymore), but I still take a look at least a couple times a week--shit still happens even with newer ones...

I'm not sure. I'm still in a bit of shock and not that mechanically inclined. I think he meant the housing bolts as he never mentioned drain.

I already have the platinum 8 yr/125k because of the three times I had the rig in for a brake override malfunction issue!

Very hard to believe for sure. And hard to believe that I didn't hit the center divider as I was in the #1 lane!

No. What really happened was the very common "rear diff oil low from factory" issue and the dealer doesn't want to admit it. Even if the "bolts came loose", means they were never torqued properly at the assembly line. 3rd member bolts don't just come loose.

There was no damage to the vehicle (at least to the body) so I didn't think of taking any, As I was a sitting sig alert on the 110 this morning I was more concerned with the possibility of being rear ended. Until CHP showed up and parked behind me until the tow truck showed up

Holy shit Larry, I'm with you. How the hell can the bolts come loose from the factory? This is a new one.

    In for the dealer resolution.

    Glad you are ok OP.
