16" vs 17" wheels: pros and cons?

Nice! Truck is looking good. I like the new setup for sure. Glad I am making the decision for the Bronze wheels or are yours Gunmetal? Can't tell but both colors look good with the MGM truck. I was thinking of 285/70/17 or 285/75/16 but been looking at 255/80/16 or 255/75/17. I can get the 17" in the next couple weeks or wait until January for the 16s.

 

I think you know you want the 16s but you don't want to wait! I was considering 255s as well but ultimately decided I don't like the pizza cutter look. Especially on aftermarket wheels. The only time I like them is on stock ones.

 

You can get the same overall size tire with either. Up until the last few years 16's had far more options and were cheaper. There are about the same number of options now, but 16's are almost always less expensive.

 

Completely agree with you on that one. At this point the overall costs will be minimal when compared to the suspension and other things I am about to grab. Performance and Look are what im going back and forth. 16 will give me more tire and look beefy as hell around the smaller rim. 17" look good only if the tire is big. Smaller tires I think it doesnt match up to the off road of the truck.

Good call. I would have pulled the trigger on the copper but not available. Missed it by a few hours. I am going to go with Matte Bronze and looking at 285/70/17. The picture below from the Ray10 thread is that setup. I should have around a 3" lift when I get everything setup.

Yea looks legit hopefully I'll won't need to do any more cutting or trimming . I already did the CMC. R u gonna run spacers all around ? I'm thinking of ordering the spidertrax 1.25inch

 

Have not got to that point yet. Did not have plans for spacers yet but who knows. The SCS 17 have a backspace of 4.3 so they are already a bit pushed out already.I have seen limited trimming. Did you do the CMC yourself or have a shop do it? Seems like that is going to be the must do piece.

I had the CMC done by demello when I had my slider put in. Yea I'm up on the air about spacers but well c , if I can find a cheap used set I'll just buy some

 

Why cheap out on a part that literally holds your wheels and tires onto your truck? A brand new set is only $200.

 

I went with 17's cause it's mostly what the desert racers use, you can buy one-race used tires for like $50 each on race-dezert.com or craigslist. That's the only reason I went with 17's.

 

I doubt spacers fail, used ones will be as good as new ones, and if I don't like the spacers in the car it's not a 250 bucks wasted that I can use on other parts

 

I went with 35" tires which are closerto 36" with 17" Beadlocks. I believe the differences to MPG and Speedo between a 16" wheel and a 17" wheel would be miniscule at best. The biggest difference will be from the tire you choose.

 

Different strokes for different folks I guess.

 

It was mentioned that the 16s might not clear some UCAs. Does anyone know if the Ray10s 16" wheel would clear the ICON UCA? ICONS say 17s are required on their page. Just checking.

 

From what I can see with my UCA's (I have stock length Total Chaos) rim size doesn't matter, but backspacing and offset does.

ICON's website says a lot of wacky things that don't make much sense to me... i.e. they tout their Stage1, Stage2, blah blah kits but do a poor job explaining what's different between the packages... they focus on "amount of lift", but never list extended and compressed shock lengths, etc. For being an off road company, they do not list any details that serious off roaders would like to / need to see. It frustrated me to the point that I gave up and went with King/Total Chaos.
