This worked out with my 2013 F150 with the 5.0L. I would get an extra 230km on 91 w/o ethanol.
I tried a few times with the taco and it didn't make any difference.

I feel this way also. My fault. I should have spent more time driving other vehicles. I bought this truck but was contemplating leasing to give me flexibility. I regret not doing that now. It is behind the 8 ball. It's dated and feel old. I sat in a newer F150 today and it was our luxury and gorgeous. I don't want a full size, but thats not the point. The new ranger will likely be stunning.

    Maybe so, maybe not...

I don't really know enough about transmissions, but have wondered what the general differences between the 4/5 speed to the 6 now 8 speeds. I figure that with the economy standards it's really just adding more gears, each reducing the range of RPMS, thus trying to keep the motor running at optimum efficiency. Again never researched, just driving manuals that's what's happened as I've gone from 4 thru 6 speeds. So to hear these automatics shift a lot doesn't supprise me. If I'm not mistaken the manual also has different gearing, I wonder what the autos would be like with the manuals gearing.

Nah, not complaining just my thoughts. I am sure I am not the only one to think some of these things. I just went to put gear in my passenger rear seat. To use the smart key system I would have to walk around to the drivers door to use this. So I used the remote... just seems senseless. I remember when the salesman handed me my key fob and I said "Is this the spare?"... Like how cheap looking is that... My neighbor just bought a new Accord and the detailing and over feel of her key fob was like holding a rolex. Sure they both get the job done.

^^the auto with the manual gearing would probably be nice, but the shifting in my auto isn't really all that bad. It just likes to get in the 1200 rpm range and stay there. It'd be nice if my ACOR came in manual choice, but the auto really isn't bad IMO, just different due to having a 6speed instead of a 5speed. I was just surprised to get better mpg when it ran at higher rpms in S mode.

I get 19-20 with mixed driving. Have 2 inch lift, removed air dam, running c rated 275 70 17s. Was getting 23 ish prior to that change. That said, I have had medium length trips that were inexplicably low, and watching the meter it looked like 16 was as good as it would get. Return trip on same path, relatively level, same speed I got 20+. All on the same tank of gas. It has has happened a couple of times.

I ran regular for 8500 miles and was getting 15 or so. Since going to premium my mpg has only gone up

I experience the same issues with a fluctuation in MPGs. The EPA rating is BS IMO. Some get, some don't. Here in California we probably have really crappy gas though, so that could be it. It is still somewhat disconcerting when the beast of a Raptor gets around the same gas mileage with about 200 more HP...

While I am a MPG hater, I would be perfectly fine with the my current mpg (15-17 mpg vary by drive style) if the engine had more power and a transmission that is on par with other well known manufacturers like Ford or GM.

You are on the money about the comparison...even the regular ecoboost is getting same or better numbers and has a lot more power on tap. I do recall

15 mpg and under-powered is a tough pill to swollow....however it has always been the Toyota way.

Crazy, I have just noticed the same thing. My truck is a manual though. Going to work I'm getting around 15.5 mpg on 90% highway. After work its closer to 17. Trip is level and temp is the same outside.

K&N air filter/LED lights/Magna Flow Muffler/TOYO AT2 Tires and lots of fun stuff.
I went 330 miles with just under half of a tank. I crammed 13 gallons in the tank. 25.3 mpg. I've taken three other road trips and averaged between 24 and 25. I'm very happy with that mpg. The trip was a mix of Highway and freeway driving.

I have a K&N drop in air filter and I put on a MagnaFlow Muffler. I noticed the biggest increase in gas mileage when I put on the MagnaFlow Muffler and also a noticeable increase in power.

I have also noticed that now that I have closer to 4000 miles on the truck it is starting to get better and better gas mileage.

Ive only put 2500 on my 16 sr5 and my average is 18.5mpg and i pretty much do only town driving. What is weird is since i have owned the truck (aug 16) when i fill up it always said 365 miles to empty. This fill up it said 425 to empty. Seem strange or have others seen that?

Keep in mind, the truck has grown physically larger and heavier and still gets as good or better econ. In order to get better fuel economy, it would have to be low to the ground and look like a Honda Ridgeline for better aero. Look at all the tacoma owners making fun of that vehicle just for the looks and lack of offroad prowess.

Check prevailing winds and elevation change between your house and work. Seriously. Here in Iowa, it's very windy in the winter. Almost always from the northwest. It often means 2 to 5 mpg difference going to or coming from work. Elevation would be similar.
