The Nissan Frontier was 261 hp 281 ft pounds of Torque. I truly believe if Toyota increase the torque numbers it would fix the downshift problem. Also better gas mileage. The engine would not have to work so hard. A Dodge Ram with a Hemi gets as good or better gas mileage than a Tacoma.

Just to throw my two cents in here, I drive mainly city with a few miles of freeway here and there and I'm averaging 16.9-17.4 mpg. Then again I only have 400 miles on mine.

That's about what I've been getting for 20k miles with similar type of driving

It's really not THAT much worse than my corolla considering the vehicle. My corolla was was getting maybe 21 if I was lucky all around. Then again I drove it alot harder since I hated it anyway.

EDIT: Also to add to this, I leased an F-150 V6 Twin Turbo (ecoboost) a few years back and could only get 14.5 mpg when I drove it the same way. Just another comparison.

Yes you can skip, I skip 4th or 5th a bunch.

    What kind of transmission?

I had a 2009 Ram quad cab 1500 4x4 with the hemi, automatic. I got 11-14 in town. I could get 18-20 on the highway. Lifetime was at 15 mpg average.

I just purchased a 2016 Frontier Pro4x CC. I have just over 1,300 miles on it. I am getting 15.5mpg in town. I did get 21 on a 200 mile highway trip. So basically I am matching the EPA rating of 15/21 so far. imo, the 4.0l Nissan pulls much better than the new Tacoma. The Nissan reminds me of my 06 Tacoma I use to have.

Had the same thing happening with my 2016 Off-road Silvio, some people on this site thought I was crazy. Using the onboard mileage & old school with tracking miles & gas it was low. Then it started creeping up, now a year later, driving the same route with the same temps, (Ohio winters), I'm hitting a solid 19.5-20.5, 2wd or 4wd. So give it some time, you'll be good

The older Dodge trucks suck on gas mileage. I'm taking about the 15 teens on up. Better technology & awesome transmission. My brother has a 15 gets a average of 20 mpg on the highway. And doesn't downshift on a little or big hill. As I said before it's all about the Torque.

Yep the winter gas gives terrible gas mileage. I think it's what they put in the gas so we don't get fuel line freeze up. Does anyone no why?

A Nissan Frontier will blow the doors off a Tacoma in drag race. Maybe I should put a Nissan 4.0 engine in my Tacoma. Come on Toyota give us some balls!

In part I agree with the winter gas, but I've seen more of an effect from temperature. I usually go through a tank in 3-4 days, the difference between a few 40-50 degree days relative to 20-30 degrees is about 4mpg for me. This is on the same tank of fuel, calculating by hand at my usual check points.

No problem, for a quick synopsis, it has to do with numerous factors including fuel blend, havoc on alternator, tires, tire pressure and a couple of other things.

I love everything about my truck except the constant shifting while driving up a grade. I drive a ton in the mountains, so it's pretty much unbearable unless you're in S-mode. Other than that, I absolutely love this thing. However, I'm kind of wishing I bought a Nissan Frontier Pro-4x. Would've saved $5k - 10k and it would drive much nicer in the mountains. Nissan makes a good vehicle. Drove an Altima for 11 years (180k miles) before I bought my Tacoma and that thing had pretty much ZERO issues during it's lifetime.

That's pretty terrible. Automatic? I had a corolla 5speed as a hyper miler project. My combined local/freeway was 36mpg and when I was hypermiling it stock I got 44mpg. A few aero mods and I would have got 60mpg easily.

Yeah I read through it and none of what was mentioned applied to me, as far as I know. I know all my past vehicles get lower mpgs starting around December, but I do none of what is mentioned in the link. In regards to gas its posted as a max of E10 where I go, so I assume it doesnt get switched to a high ethanol blend.

Overall though I do know that the reason I'm getting low numbers in the manual trans and the tires/lift. I did have an auto 16' that got between 18 and 26 and averaged 20 while I owned it.
