Having had my retinas seared off by hood reflection the other day (WTF!) when the sun was juuuuust right, I'm thinking it makes sense to throw a few bucks at a hood blackout on my white truck.

Thing is, all I'm seeing are just partial wraps. I'm not necessarily opposed to a partial wrap, I'm just wondering what it would look like to get a full blackout of the hood done.

    Any photoshop gurus out there?

I have a partial wrap similar to the white truck, and it does help some. I get less reflection into the cab, but even matte vinyl has some shine.

If you want the whole hood done, that would be an ideal trial for plastidip. It would be quick and easy to mask off, and it would have a lot less shine than vinyl.

I have a 2017 off road in MGM I'm considering getting the hood done in carbon fiber. Anyone with pics or photoshop capabilities?

Any progress on your research on hood wrap? I just picked up a MGM OR and looking to do either carbon fiber or matte black on the hood. Anyone with pics or experience with either?

So I went and had a discussion at length with the body shop that's worked with me on a bunch of other projects. They said they could do the wrap no problem, but the care of it is where issues may crop up.

The biggest hurdle is that matte wraps do not hold up particularly well to grime and dirt and grit, and I don't want to worry about it looking like ass the first time I have to scrub some mud off it after off roading. Any little scratch/scrape is going to show up, and there's no way to "buff out" a matte finish. Gloss finish doesn't have this problem.

So the options posed to me were as follows, if I wanted a matte finish:
    • Get a cheap(er) vinyl and just live with it if you mess it up a bit with mud
    • Paint black and use XPEL matte (self-healing) protection film to give it a matte look
I wasn't really happy with either (the second because of the cost!) and so I've put this project on the back burner for a bit. Also I'm moving very soon so I'm a bit on the busy side.

    Like you'd remove paint. :D

It's a form of bedliner. But no rubber chip junk, so it's not 'rough' in the same way. Yes, it has texture, but different than regular bedliner. A lot different. And texture will break up the light reflection.

You can pick from many colors, some which might compliment your vehicle nicely. Or you can stay with the black idea. You can DIY or sub it to your shop.

My truck is a long term keeper. Someday the rocker panels/bumpers/etc. will be chipped and bug damaged. They'll get monsta'd when that time comes.

I don't have a glare problem. Lots and lots of pics on the site I linked. Even whole vehicles, inside and out, multiple colors, good closeups.

The boys at xpel make a matte paint protection film (stealth)

    http://www.xpel.com/bulk-paint-headlamp-protection-material/

Just make sure to flood it with some soapy water when installing so that the adhesive doesnt stick prematurely when you're squeegeeing out the film.

I wrap vehicles and buses for a living (15+ years experience) with 3m but I dont think they make a matte protection film.

Look up on @sexytacoma on instagram...best hood layout IMO. Not the whole thing, but majority where you are most likely to get the glare.

I like the white edge, gives it a more defined look. To me, makes it appear more functional then just for looks.
