16" vs 17" wheels: pros and cons?

17's are the new 16's. There seems to be less and less tires sized for 16's.

 

I want to go with Kings, however I read only 650lb spring where with the ICON can get a 700lb. TBH idk how much it would effect things in the long run, but I've read the 650 in the ICONS tend to sag a bit when adding bumper, winch, skids ect. The 700 might alleviate that. Not sure if there is another option for the Kings, I've found less info on them. Browed Headstrong, Down South Motorsports and Toytec sites. Also the Kings cost more and blue doesn't really match my rig.

Agree and disagree on tire choice between the 16 vs 17. 17s definitely have more for 285 option, but most of those tires are 55+ lb 10 ply. With 16s, have found more 255/85/16 that are around 35 lb. Infact.... seems hard to find a tire that I like in the size/weight I want that isn't a KO2. I think 275/70/17 could be the sweet spot.

 

King has a 700lb spring option.

This is the first I've heard of that. Where did you order from? The options I mentioned don't have 700 option listed. I'm guessing call directly...

King's wholesale accounts can get them, even if they're not in stock at Wheelers/Downsouth/Headstrong/etc. I got 650lb with the intention of buying 700lb when I get a front bumper... rides awesome with stock front bumper and 650lb now.

17s are great if you want to mount up 35x12.5 tires... or be super ghey mall crawler.

16's/smallest wheel possible is best.

I've debated a lot on 16s vs 17s. I like the 16 Ray 10s and the 17 FN FX Pro

 

Simple. More tire selection in 17's it looks like.

Cons 1 less inch of total rubber and 1 more inch total of metal.

 

I currently have 265 75 16 and I plan on going bigger. I have done lots of research on this. Read all the sizes, weights, prices, etc. One positive thing I've noticed is you can get a 285 70 17 in a SL where as in a 16 you have to have a LT tire. Unsprung weight is a killer performance. The same 17 inch SL tire can weight 10 pounds less than the 16 inch LT version. Where I'm seeing 17 inch wheels only weighing a couple pounds more than the 16 inch versions. I'd love to go the 255 route with either wheel but you can't have those without the E Rated and high price tag. My thing at this point is paying that extra money to go from a 265 75 16 to a 285 70 17 worth it? It's only a tiny bit taller side wall. Such tough decisions.

 

I’m running the same size but if I ever go to 33 inch I will get 17 inch rims. The options are better and lighter like you pointed out. I think it’s worth the extra money but I’m not ready. Don’t really need bigger tires right now.

 

I think I'll go 17s as well. These are the four I've narrowed my list down to. Does anyone know if there is a certain wheel width that makes fitting the 285 easier? I would think narrower so the tire sits taller to keep it away from the upper control arm. But that's just a guess

 

Mrnond 101 those are the 17’ 4 runner rims right? Do you have a lift on ur taco? And what size tire are you running on that?

 

More sidewall they seem to ride a bit easier, the 17s look better on the tacoma though imho.

I believe most 285s call for 7.5-9.5 rim width. I put them on my f250 with 16x7 wheels and have had no problems. Ive read of guys mounting them on 16x6.5s as well with no issues. One big issue is that some shops like Costco wont install the tires since its technically out of spec.
