It may not have the same viscosity as ATF. I had a friend who put dedicated steering fluid in one of his cars one time when it requested ATF fluid and his pump seized. Dont know if the same issue might arise with a taco, but I dont want to be the one to find out. Also, I dont think the manual states to use steering fluid either but I could be mistaken.

Manual says to use Dextrol type II or III auto transmission fluid. I would assume its fine because, well, its power steering.. Your friend 100% sure it was the fluid that caused it to seize up?

 

Thats about all i was able to get. Going to do it again in the spring.

 

Because 9/10 times, ATF is what is in hydraulic power steering fluid systems. The only reason it isn't 100% standard is because of places like california that don't like it because they say its "a fire hazard in a crash" or "worse for the environment if it leaks out." Newsflash california, NOTHING WE DO WITH VEHICLES IS GOOD FOR THE FUCKING ENVIRONMENT.

 

Oh cool well there you go. BTW, I didnt mean this instruction specifically at you as I believe you were using the highest grade ATF dextrol III fluid available. Just was stating in general that "steering fluid" may not be dextrol III compliant.

So if the world blows up due to my Taco...I can live with that.

Haha I didn't mean that aggressively at all either, just confused why you shouldn't use power steering fluid in a power steering system. Who knows you may be right?

 

Thats fine. Just read the bottle, it'll tell you what it is compareable to. I used mobil 1 synthetic ATF, it says on the bottle that it is for general motors and toyota vehicles. Then on the back it says that it is essentially a mix of both dexron 2 and 3.

Mine is stained. I've had a leak before though. This new fluid appears to have solved the leak issue thus far.

That works just fine. I pretty much did the same thing....just in a more messy manner.

Owners manual states that dexron 2 or 3 ATF is preferred...

Plus most places won't have a power steering fluid that will actually say whether or not it is comparible with your vehicle. But everywhere will have trans fluid...

 

Toyota PS systems don't accept any sort of dedicated PS fluid. Only dexron 2 or 3. Anything else will eat away the seals. Just like if you put the wrong coolant or brake fluid in.

Different types of fluid. ATF fluid is just made differently. Idk, I've seen seals go bad and other issues using the wrong fluid. Toyota designed it only one way

 

My car has a leaking PS pump currently and it has OEM Volvo fluid in it.. I honestly don't think its the fluid and that its just by chance.

 

Is the Volvo fluid dexron 2 or 3? I know the Europeans use their own thing that's not even ATF or PS fluid like here.

It won't happen right away but it'll degrade it over time and it'll start to leak

Edit: you mean your DD? It could just be that it's been used and abused. The fluid didn't hurt anything if it's exactly what Volvo calls for.

 

I'm more than happy with mine. No problems thus far. I know I've been mentioning upgrading but that's because I can't leave shit alone.

 

Few small updates, nothing exciting. Saw this thing this morning on my way to class and didn't think anything of it, until I saw the dynatrac portals


Tried to replace my tie rods last weekend but when I put it on the lift noticed my driver side boot was not only OFF the rack, but also torn absolutely no where carries them or includes them with the inner tie rods.. so had to order from the dealer. Might need a new rack since that is probably what is making the noise but no leaks..

Ordered up straps for my trailer and an adjustable height-wise 14k hitch


And doing maintenance now between school and work. Truck can finally stay in the garage for as long as I need
Started with retorquing everything up front, and repainting these.


List is starting to get shorter for moab prep

 

Portals, so much money. Would be a nice rig if it weren't for the color, but i guess thats an easy fix
