As far as anyone else with gears, I believe you could get the rear gears from Yukon, because they are the same as the second-gen from what I understand. The fronts only through a Nitro at this point. So I suppose it makes sense to get all of it through Nitro.

Thanks bud, actually forgot how much I enjoyed driving it. The owner wasn't there when I picked it up but I talked to one of the mechanics there, I told him I was nervous and he said I wouldn't be. He talked to the other guy that put the 25 miles on it and said it was whisper quiet and shouldn't be anything to worry about. Still don't have a real answer on what the problem was the first time. Either a bad set of Gears or the install was a little bit off don't really know.

Glad everything worked out for you with the 4.88's. I really don't feel like dishing out over $2k for gears, however this sluggish transmission is very annoying. I feel like Toyota R&D missed the boat on this transmission. What were they thinking when they test driving these trucks and working out the bugs. Did no one complain about the lack of torque with this new 3.5 motor? I think they all bought in to this motor was suppose to have more HP and improved MPG.
Any chance there is another option to wake these trucks up and give them more torque of the line. Could an aftermarket tune fix it? I honestly believe they should have given this truck an 8 speed transmission and all of problems would be solved. 1st and 2nd gear would be really low and 7th and 8th would be overdrive gears. I opted for the extended warranty when I purchased my TRD PRO A/T and I don't like the idea of a gear swap potentially screwing my transmission and rear differential up and voiding my warranty.
I already had my truck in for the updated transmission flash that was a TSB. They told me it would fix the any transmission issues I was having. After putting about 500 miles on it since the flash update I have only noticed an improvement in the gear change form P to R after initial start up. It used to have a noticeable clunk and now that is a little smoother. All gear changes and acceleration appears to be the same and still sluggish. The ECT PWR options button only seems to assist with holding gears so it is more responsive while moving but nothing for initial take off through the first few gears. Maybe i will just wait for a possible new 8-speed transmission to come out and put that $2k towards the new one.

Should be the opposite. At least for the off road version. We get the 8.75 rear that only nitro makes. The front is the same as 2nd gen.

Depends on Dealership. Mine covered everything bc they installed everything. That being said most won't....

Does anyone really take you serious? You rarely post anything insightful. You usually post comments to agitate and basically shit disturb. If people like me who don't find any of the issues you think are so prevalent in the Tacomas, you say we "lack situational awareness". You rip apart the gen 3 and whine about how Toyota is just in it for the profits........news flash......they are like any other corporation. Like others have asked, why do you keep the Tacoma if you hate it so much? You say your wife and sister own Toyotas, why? No one forced you. Yet you come on these boards and provide no value other than to whine about how Tacomans suck and how you're going to stick it to Toyota. Good luck with that. People like me who "lack situational awareness" will continue to enjoy our rides.

Awesome! Glad you got your truck back. I think you'll be trouble free this time. I'm so close to pulling the trigger myself, just hate spending the money on gears!

As far as me having that backwards on the front and rear mine is a automatic, and both my installer and the guy at JT's told me the rear is the same as they've been using for years. And if you have your gears changed out and hear a whining noise like I did, don't accept it.

Correct. Only the TRD OR and Pro have the new 8.75" rear, and only Nitro has gears for them right now.

So does Yukon make gears for the 8" rear in the non TRD model? What about the front diff in the non TRD model?

Update, here is the trucks RPMs at 70mph and 75mph after the speedo was re-calibrated and the MPG almost before another refill. Gained almost 1 mpg going to 4.88s. For those of you that didn't read my posts earlier it is a manual 4x4 sport with the 8.75 diff and the tires are 285/70r17s.

Hows it feel now when you're in the power band now without downshifting?
