Switched to synthetic oil, now 'bouncy' idle, 2011 V6

Happens more often than ya think. One of the first things I did to my truck was install a Fumoto valve "just in case". Good luck with the truck OP...

You don't need Stealership ATF. Get some Valvoline MaxLife ATF at wallyworld - $18 for a gallon (it's WS compatible). Pick up some new syn oil while you're there.

Also get an IR gun. ATF level is checked based on ATF temp and the drain tube in the trany pan. There is no ATF dip stick.

 

ATF should be 122 F +/- 7 degrees. Use lower range for IR method. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8hBF4X79gCY

 

On a side note:
Use that excess ATF to make penetrating oil, 50:50 with acetone.
Even better than Kano Kroil.

 

I hate to be the nay sayer in the group but Amsoil is NOT synthetic.
Only true made in the US is Redline.

 

Alright, what's the punchline?

Synthetics are chemically engineered oils, and Amsoil is a chemically engineered motor oil.

 

Everything is humming and purring again like it should. Added 3.25 quarts of Toyota ATF, did the AT Temp level check and the pan drained about 1/8 quart. Fresh oil too after draining my oil double-up and adding 5.5 quarts. Thanks again to yota243 for figuring out what I messed up, and the rest of the TW folks who chimed in.

 

Glad to hear it. These are tough trucks and over built trannys, some of which even left the factory with low fluid from what it seems. The extra oil was prolly worse on the truck than the low tanny cuz it holds like 17 qts or somethin total, may have added a little extra stress on some internals, and it may only make it to 400k miles now haha

I had the same experience, ended up being just a coincidence, and a dirty MAF sensor.

I go over my truck once in a while with an IR gun looking for hot spots. In 5 min. you can obtain a wealth of information. Beats a break down on the road somewhere. After a while you get to know what's normal for brakes, bearings, etc. Now I know what's normal for the tranny!

 

In doing research to try and figure out what was wrong, I added cleaning the MAF sensor and throttle body to my near term maintenance plan. This forum is helpful for hearing the experiences of other drivers and not just theory in a maintenance manual.

 

I concur. Did you check the air filter? Did you change the plugs? I would guess vacuum leak as well from what you are saying but misfires could create a similar scenario.
