Rear proportional valve leaking

My 99 tacoma 4X4 is leaking brake fluid from the boot on the rod that fastens to the rear axle housing. Is there a kit to repair this or do you have to replace the proportion valve.

 

It's definitely leaking, oem replace is pricey, I replaced my own with a wilwood Racing adjustable proportion valve, you also have to delete the return line and re route the LF line from master cylinder.

 

it is possible to open it up and see what's going on. I did open mine because it stopped working, but everything was fine and I couldn't get it to work again. It was just dead. So I ended up getting rid of it.

If yours is leaking, it must be the little rubber seals on the piston that are torn or something. Anyway, I think you'd be better with a manually adjustable prop. valve because a replacemement is quite pricey (toyota wants 400$ here). You can also remove it and put nothing back, it's up to you

 

Thanks, I checked with Toyota here locally, and they said Toyota has a boot and seal kit for $75 that usually fixed the leaking problem.

 

Really? They say they have a kit, well I'll be,,, I searched high and low for a kit, even overseas,,, if you don't mind post up the name of your dealership and location.

But to get to the point, I took mine off,, leaking like yours,,, took that dude down to bear bones and cleaned the fire out of it. Been about 3 years now and it's all good. The only reason I think it works is because to me it's kinda a "pass through" for fluid. I don't think it pressures up like the dead end wheel cylinders.

So if you can't get your kit, try that,, mine is working fine, but please post up the address if you'll will for future use.

Not being that familiar with these things, could you possibly post a picture?

I've never seen a proportioning valve in the rear of any vehicle, only a splitter fitting, one the has the line in from the master and then runs a line to the L&R sides.

OE proportioning valves are usually 'fixed' in function, control the pressure proportions between the F & R.

The only ones I've seen that work L & R on an axle are roundy rounds that want more inside braking to help turn the race car. Not sure a Tacoma qualifies.

 

1st gens had them. When you put a load in the back of the truck the bar moves the valve increasing brake pressure to the rear wheels. The load lowered the bed effectively making the bar that was attached to the rear axle move pressing on the proportioning valve on the driver's side of the frame rail.

 

Yep, looks like the right one to me, well the first link anyway has a search for fittment, and it'll fit my 95'... I'd still like to see the kit for the valve if there is such a thing, hope so.

 

I called Lake Charles Toyota yesterday asking about a proportion valve,that mine is leaking. The parts man ask where mine is leaking, I told him from the boot where the rod is connected. He suggested that I take it off and check valve to be sure it is bad because it is $250 . He said that most of the time a boot and seal kit for $75 will fix the problem.
I work shift work so it will be a week or so before I can take it off and take to toyo. parts and see if kit will fix. I hope so. I will post part # and other information when I get it.

Ok,will do. Like I said it will be over a week before I get a chance to work on it.

 

I wonder if the second Gen proportion valve would work? I'd be all for getting rid of the load sensor. I don't think it's ever worked (same rear pads as new w/ 200K miles on them) and rebending the rod just makes the rears lock up.

 

Just remember if you are driving the truck and the proportioning valve goes completely you will have no brakes as it ties the front and rear brakes together.

I did the factory replacement. The part was $275 plus I replaced the leveling arm also that was another $185. Sucks dishing out the extra dough but it's nice when all you have to is ubolt the old one and bolt the new one back in its place. Bleed it and you're done

 

I'm surprised that the rebuild kits cost that much. I recently purchased an OEM rebuild kit for Tundra brake calipers. The kit (that does both calipers) was about $20.

 

Well the rebuild kit I was talking about the other day was the boot and bushing kit for the the rod that connects to the axle housing and to the valve on the other end. Nothing for the valve itself. However I did take the valve apart and discovered that the spool was stuck and would not move as it should. It had some hard rusty buildup on the spool that would not allow it to move. I cleaned it and polished it smooth. I could not see any damage to the spool or seals. I put it back together . So far no leaks. Only driven a few miles though. Keeping fingers crossed. If it starts leaking I will order valve from Amazon , it is 100 bucks cheaper than dealer.
