    Good Morning 50's!
Got a 3500 watt generator and a 5 gallon gas can for free from a friend who is moving and doesn't have room. He also threw in a pair of snow chains. What in the hell am I going to do with these things...I live in So Cal?

Hang onto the generator. Use the snow chains for "fence art".

In many of the older homes there are pipes exposed or not insulated in different places through the house. My garage is attached and kitchen above it. Where the water pipes turn to go up in the ceiling of the garage it is against the outside wall and I insulated them the best I could. But if I leave the garage door open too long in this type of weather they will freeze. I made a panel in the ceiling that I pop out and put a heat gun on high on them when they do. Garage is heated on the same system as the house but only gets up to 40* Outside walls and water lines seem to cause the most problem. One of my neighbors is a retired plumber and he said in the winter frozen pipes were the main reason for emergency calls in the winter for residential work.

    Probably.
Even could be a problem with houses that have pex piping in wall. Heat up pipe too much too fast and melt pipe in wall about the time the faucet thaws!
    Doh!

You can also double insulate and use cold weather foil tape over heat tapes.

    I'm a plumber with frozen pipes!!:annoyed:

But not anymore. Kitchen faucet finally blew open!
    Even have hot water!

Congrats and glad life is back to normal!

Yeah if the plumber that installed them would have left any room between the pipes and the wall I would do all of the above. But he ran them right up against the wall even though he had plenty of room

We just started using pex at work. It seems more durable than pvc. We've only been doing short runs, mostly inside the restrooms in the maintenence ally ways. A lot of that pvc is pretty old and brittle and I was chasing leaks almost daily. We built a manifold with brass valves for each sink/toilet/urinal/shower so we can isolate each one and not have to shut down an entire side of the building (mens/womens) the way it was originally designed.

Exactly. Just cover it outside. It's not uv rated.
And they have premature per manifolds down here. Just add valves.
