Just checked my fluid. I was .9 of a quart low. Feels better after being filled properly. Mine is a 2017 TRD Offroad built in September.

This has been on going for close to 5 years . Our 2nd gen trucks also came from the factory with low fluid .
You should of heard the guys badmouthing me when I started these posts but I think things have turned around now .
It,s rather obvious Toyota knows about the low fluid issue but continues to do nothing about it .
Strange that Toyota prefers to hand out extended warranties to those members who scream loud enough rather than rectify the problem at the factory ?

I bought my 4WD 2017 TRD sport on 27 December. The sticker indicates that it was made in Texas. It had a December inspection sticker, so it was delivered within the last month. I drove it home, but have not driven it since, so it has 13 miles on it.

Today (31 December) I checked the fluid. My driveway has a slight slope, so for me, the hardest part for me was finding a level surface. I backed it out of my driveway into the street and checked level with a 24 inch level on top on the edge of the bed.

My truck needed about 1/3 of a quart, which is probably close enough to call it full from the beginning, especially since I'm not 100 percent sure that it was level. It's also a little cold today (about 45F), and I checked the level as soon as the D came on, so the transmission temperature was probably at the low end of acceptable range.

I'll also add that the specification for the torque spec (15 ft-lb) for the overflow plug seems a little high for a 5mm hex bolt.

Hey Gear Cruncher, would there be any problem with us just draining all the trans fluid , minus the TC , and refilling/replacing the fluid to capacity spec....and what is the capacity spec? Rather than going through the temp mode, this mode, the pump, d blah, blah, blah.....Just trying to make it easy on me, and others.

I have the 4 cylinder 2TR-FE which requires this:

    Automatic transmission 2TR-FE engine Fluid capacity* 2GR-FKS engine 9.1 qt. (8.6 L, 7.6 Imp.qt.) Fluid type Vehicles without towing package: 10.5 qt. (9.9 L, 8.7 Imp.qt.) Vehicles with towing package: 10.7 qt. (10.1 L, 8.9 Imp.qt.) Toyota Genuine ATF WS

Would be a waste of hard earned cash if you didnt save the fluid considering your fluid is brand new . Why not overfill the trans , wait till it warms up , then let it drain out the overflow ?

Great idea too, but I am going to change it out anyhow with Amsoil signature series ATF which exceeds Toyota WS ATF......fortunately, I do have money to spend....unfortunately... I have absolutely ZERO patience for games at dealerships and "master" tech bullshit, I doubt my truck will even go back to any Toyota dealership for any tech to "practice" on, and I don't trust them 1 bit anyhow....I had to lemon a 2014 Ford with less than 1500 miles on it for driveline vibration, which they bought back off me after my lemon law lawyer threatened to sue under PA state law, and I sure as hell damn well do it with Toyota too, if they are going to sell trucks for the ridiculous amount of cash they are....they better damn well be right on the money right off the lot.

Just got the 6 year 100,000 mile platinum warranty for free - refunded actually. Bought it for $1149 and they'll send a check for that.

So my truck goes in tomorrow to get checked I told the lady on the phone that it should be covered under warranty and she said the service manager would go over the warranty information but I checked and it says the transmission is covered for 60,000 miles. The dealership is half a mile down the road from my house and the weather is around 20 degrees F tomorrow so does anyone know how long it would take for the engine to cool down in time for them to do a proper manual check of the ATF? Also I'm getting this ATF checked cause I've heard a lot of trd sport owners who didn't experience problems but found out their fluid was still low, but whenever I shift from R to D especially in colder weather the car lunges forward even though my foot is down on the brake, would this be a problem experienced from low fluid?

Alright so just got my truck into the dealer and asked if they would manually check the fluid by putting it on a lift and the service advisor told me "There isn't a dipstick to check the fluid so the techs use a machine to check the level" I told her how there's a way to check the level by putting it on a lift and she told me that the techs are certified so they know the best way to check. Should I just go to another dealership and tell em that they wouldn't check my fluid properly? I assume the other dealer would also cover the work under the warranty as well.

You just got a whole round of BS from the lady. There are copies of the Factory Service Manual on this website. Just search for them.

Yeah I downloaded one for the automatic transmission I have from @gearcruncher but I didn't think it would be necessary to bring it since this dealership always come through well on things I need done. I can always take it to another place.

Oh yeah, the dealerships care so much about us, and our trucks. Really they do. I promise they do, they are so knowledgable too, Toyata trained in fact....so they must be good....and care.

Every time I go to the dealer to get a service on another car in the family they always come out and tell me something else that's apparently "wrong" with. One time a dealer told me the brake fluid was dirty in my moms 13 Camry at 60k miles and I told him not to change it considering we had an 05 Camry for 150k miles which never needed a brake fluid flush. When I checked the fluid it was perfectly clean I just topped it off with valvoline dot 3 and when I compared the two liquids they were basically the same. I've stopped trusting the service departments at dealerships.

My 2017 will never see a dealership for anything unless they are giving away free oil. Toyata "care" ....yeah....whatever :jerkoff:

Yeah honestly I would rather pay for oil changes and actually get to see the mechanic whose working on the damn truck then a service advisor who just wants money for "free services"

No doubt man, that old saying.......if you want something done right.... .you know the rest....I am my favorite mechanic....always have been.....have a 2002 cavalier with 245,000 miles on it, never seen the dealership after I drove her off the lot....her body is a lot different than it used to be, but has been one of the most reliable cars I ever drove, and STILL drive to this day, she'd be lost if I took her the dealer for anything. And the same goes for my 2016 civic, and my 2017 tacoma, they'll never see the dealership or any "certified tech" for anything . Good luck bro!

Thanks bro same to you. Hopefully after a year or two when I get a place close to my campus I'll get a driveway and garage with a good space to do my own maintenance. I'm trying to do some stuff myself on the truck, either that or go to my trusted mechanic. She deserves the best.
