First oil change on the Taco (Ontario)

I know this has probably been asked and answered a million times on the forum but there are just so many threads on the topic and I am getting overwhelmed with the information.

My truck was serviced with synthetic oil from new, I am not sure what brand of oil as it was not the dealership that maintained it. I'm hoping some Ontario guys can chime in with their recommendations?
Which brand of oil is good for our climate?
Where do you buy your oil?
Where do you buy your filter?

Thanks I appreciate the post. Do you use synthetic oil? If so which viscosity? My local Costco sells Castrol synthetic oils are they good oils?

I used Mobil 1 5W30 with OEM v8 filters (D3 is on the label) instead of the v6 filter. Swapped every 10k. Super quick oil changes.

 

How does using a v8 filter speed up oil changes? Are you using synthetic 5w30 oil? Where do you buy your oil and filters?

 

I use either Mobil 1 High Mileage 05-30W or Pennzoil Platinum High Mileage. Any name brand oil will work as long as it meets the vehicles specs and most modern oils do. I also use the OEM filters bought off of Amazon. If you're not sure of the oil weight because of the climate check your owners manual, I always run 05-30W but my climate is almost sultry compared to yours.
If you like look at getting your oil analyzed at a lab like Blackstone, I usually have mine done once a year and there's lots of useful information in those reports.

Same speed, though the v8 filter has 50% more filtration media than the v6 filter - it's about an inch taller. More filtration to me can't be any worse.

Yep 5w30 synthetic mobil 1 (I don't believe they make dino oil anymore?) - i usually buy at Crappy tire when the jug is on sale for $30. I used about 5.5L per oil change, so the 4.4L+1L bonus pack was perfect. I typically have a spare 1L bottle to top up when required. Castrol Syntec is perfectly good as well. Running synthetic gives much smoother start-ups in the winter, i even run it in my snowblower.

What I'm saying is that on the 2nd gen v6, the oil changes are the fastest of any vehicle I've ever worked on. Everything is easily accessible. It would be even quicker if i had installed a fumoto valve.

 

My Fumoto valve actually makes the oil change take longer but it sure makes it easier! Adding the Fumoto valve was one of the first thing I did to my truck.I agree the oil change on the 2nd Gen V6 is very easy.

I am also in Ontario and use the Toyota OEM filter ( buy a case of filters from your dealer and he will give you a break on the price) and Mobil 1 ( 5W30) when it comes on sale at Canadian Tire.

I run penzoil platinum. like stated before any brand name synthetic will do you just fine. some guys switch it up between penzoil and mobil 1. the theory for the rotation is that each company uses different cleaning agents and the switch up kind of gives it a little extra cleaning. I use oem filters, I did a little digging online to try to find a better price on the filters and they are all about 6 or 7$. was at the dealer the other day getting my recall leafs put in and their price was the same as online and he gave me the bleed screw crush washer with it. next time I'm there I'm going to just buy a case to hopefully save some coin and to save the extra trips haha

 

I just go to the stealer. If the right guys are working they give me 15% off, so $6 or so each. Cheaper than ordering online and cheaper than crappy fram filters. They sell gaskets for a buck i believe. honestly i change mine every oil change or two, never had a problem in over 10 years. When i was a poor college kid i used the same gasket for years... lol...

Look into the Fumoto valve, never worry about changing gaskets or stripping a drain plug ever again.

Anybody use or recommend the Toyota oil? That's what I've been using for my truck.

Do you know whether the V8 filters have the same bypass pressure? That would be my only concern.
