Towing problem

Here is the deelima. I am moving from ny to tn towing in a u haul trailer my 07 vstar 1300 and I need to stop in va to pick up my quad 02 4x4 arctic cat 375 and need to figure out a way to make it work its been years since I've had the quad in the truck bed and I don't think I can do it with the gate up. Anyone with experience in trailer and gate down towing or at gate up experience would be appreciated. Specs on quad 81" long wheel base is 50" ( I know the definition of wheel base) thanks for the help pics also a GREAT help

 

Just a thought...maybe take the tailgate off, and put it in the trailer, wrapped up to protect it? Sounds like you are worried about trailer clearance on turns and the like with the gate down...

 

That's the main thing I am worried about aside from if my quad will fit length wise. Width wise I know it fits

 

If the quad fits with the tailgate up I'm absolutely ok I just can't remember if it does or doesn't

One of these might give you enough room to tow with the tailgate down. It does reduce tongue weight capacity so it may not be practical

If it helps I used car ramps to get the front end of my grizzly a little further ahead and letting the air out of the rear tires allowed me to close the tailgate.. 2 cents

 

That's a much cheaper idea than buying a atv bed riser. I don't know why I didn't think about that. Thats

 

I looked at those I don't think I can afford to lose the weight capacity

 

What's the measurement of your grizzly?

 

I own one of these. It is to attach bike racks or a light basket only. Mine specifically says it is not for towing use.

One thing to consider if you think you can close the tailgate with it in there, or against the tailgate...the inner skin is plastic, and a bit fragile. IF the ATV is going to be resting against the tailgate, perhaps a replacement inner tailgate skin is not a bad idea, like the Mobtown liner and cap...just a thought.

 

I use blocks of wood to fill in the space from the wheel well to the cab. This puts the front of the quad up and allows me to close the gate. 2009 raptor and my 09 450R. I'm looking for some photos right now.

 

If your quad is available could you provide the measurement wheel base and full length thanks

 

here is a bad photo. you can see how the front of the quad it up. blocks are level with the wheel well. I have gone up higher to make more room. I can close the gate with out the blocks also. I just have to give it a light push.

 

Other guys with quads will help you figure this out, but I would recommend not towing with the tail gate down. I have an 8' utility trailer and needed 10' sheets of drywall for a project. I did that whole "I'll be careful" thing in my head and loaded the drywall so it hung over the tongue 2'. (about the same amount at the tail gate would take up) And, I was very careful most of the way home, most of the way. Then a moment of forgetfulness and the crunch of breaking plastic. Busted out the tail light.

Another thought is to rent a trailer that is big enough for the bike and quad.

 

Here is how our honda rancher fits in my longbed. I lose an inch or so in the front with the roll up tonneau, but the tailgate wouldn't shut either way. If I had to pull a trailer, I'd just pull the tailgate off, and strap the crap out of the quad.
