I moved into my third gen from a 2004 4.7l v8 Dakota. I miss the shit out of her and it pains me to think about her in the scrap yard... That being said, I am loving this Tacoma. My only complaint is that Toyota hasn't made a v8 version.

Oh trust me, that is the plan! A thorough test drive or drives is coming. And yep, I do tend to over-analyze things....I did that sort of work for many years before I retired, and it's hard to stop being quantitative to the extreme. But there is SO much more to it that only a couple of thorough test drives can bring to light. For instance, I suspect that I will find the Tacoma's seat and seating position uncomfortable, and I may find that the Colorado lack of keyless lock/unlock/start is more of a negative than I think. I still believe they are both terrific trucks, but undoubtedly there are a few lemons in both camps.......

I just had done some research for myself and thought I'd pass it along for what it's worth. Our last car buyer decision wasn't a good one: Mercedes C300. I went by the reputation and "looks" much more than I should have done, and now we have a car, that while wonderful when it's all working, has so many piddling issues that it can be frustrating. So I've learned it takes more than just a test drive, or drives. I gleaned from the very elementary research I did is that there really is not much difference in the in the two trucks, at least according to my 15 minute analysis and the sources I used.

I agree, but with my "quick and dirty" analysis I had to assume those issues were equally spread among the complainers. Not scientific I know. But it's something. And, remember that my findings were generally that the complaints, at worst, were equal for the two trucks, something I had not expected. I did the research basically to make me feel better - if there were an overwhelming number of complaints against one of the other I'd have intensified my research. And of course, I still need to actually drive both trucks! But during these dreary wintery days, sitting at my PC and doing online research is the easiest thing to do.....<g>

You got that right! It never ceases to amaze me there can be so many subjective comments on anything that are completely the opposite! We do quite a bit of cruise ship travel, and of course I do my research.....and find that some people absolutely hate the cabin/ship/port, while others think it's the best they've ever experienced. So I tend to discount the 10% worst and 10% best and make my decision on that. Not perfect, but I think it's better than a coin flip.

Thanks for adding that. I was not aware the CPS had been solved for the later productions. I had heard that about the transmissions....and identically on the GM transmissions......wonder why this continues to be a problem?

I think I'll be okay with the Tacoma's (or GM's) power. While my truck is big and powerful, our car is not, and I have adapted pretty well to it. I still would jump on a manual transmission in a heartbeat for the truck if I were going to be the only driver, and I did not consider resale at all, and I could find one. I think that would solve 90% of the transmission problems I hear on this and other forums. I have no problem shifting gears, in fact I prefer it, but I know I am in the extreme minority.

While the web can be helpful....it's also dangerous. Information overload can be a real problem. Throw in an opinion from everyone with an internet connection and it can become difficult to find you own needs, wants and desires.

    Disconnect

I'm beginning to think a lease is a great idea for some folks. Lease for the shortest time available then see if its a lemon or you dont like things about the vehicle.

I dont say this lightly as I pay cash and hold on to them for 20+ yrs.

That's not the point. I want a V8 manual in a mid sized truck. I don't need/ want a full size. Also, Tundras don't come in a stick.

Im curious about something. I looked at the Chevy half tons also. One thing that irritated the shit out of me, and that I couldn't get over was that the steering wheel wasn't centered with the setting position. The steering wheel is set to the right by a couple inches. I just couldn't get over that. Does that bother you or no? Do you even notice it?

I'm driving mine now. Don't see what you're describing.

Centered on the drivers seat and instrument panel perfectly.

So, something about the meeting position. The first time I drove the truck it was an issue for me. I still bought the truck because of the other pluses of the truck. The next time I finally got to drive the truck, the seating position didn't bother me as much, and the third time I drove it it really didn't bother me much at all. So I think as you get used to it, it will be O.K.
My wife, on the other hand, is not bothered by the seating position at all. And she is the one who drives it every day. I only get to drive my truck when we go somewhere, and on longer trips. Thats been the extent of me getting to drive it so far, the 100 mile trip home, and a 300 mile round trip to see family over the holidays.
