So yeah, I don't know how @WOODEX M.E. wired his gauges to dim. From my understanding of the SH wiring diagram, the gauges and gauge needle illumination both have the same common ground. The dial lighting has a separate power and ground after the inverter, but if I were to use those two wires to tap into the Tacoma's dimmer wiring, the needle would not dim. Maybe I'm wrong...? @loginfailed you're better with electronics than I am, what do you think (or anyone else?)

Not the best photo. I tapped into a solid green wire for the dimming of the gauges. The dimming works when the head lights are turned on. This was my first time doing anything electrical. So far so good. no problems.

Thank you, @tacomavoyager. I think that's what @loginfailed said he did, but the inference I drew from his comments was that they didn't dim. I'll give y'alls method a shot.

Kinda stupid but the way I made sure it worked was hooked up the power and the ground. Then I left the white wire disconnected and inserted it into the connector with the green wire to make sure the dimming feature worked by turning the headlights on and off. Then I was able to make my final connections. Like I said this was my first time doing any electrical. So take it easy on me if it's not 100% right. But so far so good on the dimming feature and no problems with the gauges

Mine are straight on or off. I didn't hook into the dimmer. I was planning to do the dimming part later. From what it sounds like, you might need to hook the wires on inverter backwards to work with the Tacoma. Now you have me wanting to go mess with mine, dang it, @Biscuits ! :D

Haha ok so from what i remember this is what i did. Keep in mind this was like 3 years ago i did this. And yeah loginfaild is right i think on which whire it was. I remember struggling to find the right wire and it had to do with one of the green ones. So that reversed voltage thing, i beat my head for hours on that but i think i hooked that up to the negative on the gauge. I could be wrong.......but it would be an easy check. Let me know if it works for you. Sorry i cant remember for sure to help you guys out. But mine do dim.......

No worries man. Thank you for your help.

I just said to hell with it, lopped off the connector, and shoved the harness and a grommet through the firewall on the driver's side. I then ran the remainder of harness along the top of the firewall and then dropped it down on the other side of the transmission. I was careful to stay away from the exhaust.

Thanks man. Well, I tried the solid green wire due to @tacomavoyager's feedback. Dimming = no dice.

So later I'm going to undo the ground and splice it into the green-white wire and see what happens.

Glad to know I helped! Yeah i have been boosted since Feb, 2013.

I did actually pull out my gauge cluster and srurround as well for the dimmer mod. I think it is needed to get to that green n white wire. Or at oeast that was how i did it.

Hmm sorry that didn't work. Id take more pictures but the truck is at the dealer getting diagnosed due to bank 2 air/fuel ratio imbalance. Hopefully you can get it figured out. I know someone else will chime in with some better feedback.

Almost wholesale theft, @WOODEX M.E., but you know what they say: imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

I almost pulled the trigger on Tanabe gauges though. Those are sweet

Twig and berries froze off last night working on this.

    Excellent. Thanks man.

Is that dimming I see!? Im glad you finally got those hooked up and the way you wanted.

Also, i think the information on these gauges over the past couple years is the most productive information i have provided to our community.

I wish! I just left the gauges hooked to the green wire. I have a lot to do today so I'll fiddle with the dimmer tonight or tomorrow.

This was an unpleasant surprise though: the steering wheel rubs against the gauges. Did you have this issue?
