    Surprise, surprise... NOT!

I do not miss those long and brutal winters, especially that drive from Jocko Point along the north shore of Lake Nipissing.

Just meant in general. If i am breaking into the diff I may as well add a locker.
Glad you made it home safe and sound. Happy I'm helping. Learning a lot as well through these adventures.
Glad you made it home safe and sound.

Lol the bumpers help, but having exposed tow points help a bunch too! Haha

What are the basic recovery gear we should carry for a snow wheeling like this?

Generally if you have a hitch that's half the battle. Then a tow strap (30,000 lb) a snatch strap is better but they are pricey. Then a way to attatch it to your truck. Shackle receiver works.

Worst case we have stuff that we can help you out. Biggest thing is having a hitch (front and rear recovery points)

Seems like I'm good to go! I saw a pic with maxtrax too Thought it would be a must to have... But I have some "bear paws"( thats how I call them), around 16" long made of steel with cross bars and crampons I keep in the truck in winter. I unstuck a few guys with them but never had to use them for myself lol will try to take some pics tomorrow.

What is the difference between the tow strap and the snatch strap? The one I have may be better than I think it is!

Snatch strap has the ability to stretch so it provides a elastic snatch to get the person out. I just use tow straps. Cheaper and they work fine for me. I have two 30 footers ($60) vs over a 100 for a Arb snatch strap or a bubba rope.

As long as your not using chain or those straps with metal hooks on them your good.

Do you use the tow one to give a kick to the stuck one? Strap is able to take it? I may have a tow strap then I will read the label sometime lol

The tow strap does give a bit of a kick. It's not like a chain recovery where it's a huge jolt. It's smooth, you can go slow and it's a lot more controlled. With a snatch strap it's even smoother, the strap does all the work.

If you google some videos you can see the difference. I have a video on my phone from yesterday that I'll try to upload.

    Thanks! Very useful info!
I was thinking to enlarge the passenger side front recovery point to fit a shackle there. I red a few post saying it is not a very trusted point... Do you have an opinion on that?

Here is a video using a tow strap. Still works but compared to a snatch strap, less work from the recovery vehicle is needed

A shackle will fit through the welded hook not the bolt on one. I have been recovered from there and it works. Just have to be mindful. The welded hook is pretty sturdy, those with an Arb bumper use that hook a lot.

It's welded to the crossmember that attaches all the steel bumpers so it's pretty sturdy.

I'll have a look at the other one that is bolted and if it doesn't feel strong enough I may weld it on place myself lol just a reason to use my welder :D

Lol. They do have bolt on ones that fit a shackle through them. Regardless it is attatched to the same crossmember.

In general that crossmember isn't as strong as it should be. Hell my 150-200lb bumper is attatched to 1/8th plate (I replayed it with 3/16) which all the cross members on these trucks are attatched.
This is where all that magic happens lol. Don't have a picture of the other side but the bolts go on this side and the welded hook is on the other.

By the way @Kemosabe have you explored any of the trails in Quebec? Swisha loop, gaspe loop, any of the trails?

Uniballs in the UCAs. Can't hear them in the cab, but the GoPro was hard-mounted on my plate bumper, so all the noise gets picked up undamped.

Aaah... My AP end links were squeeking like a mofo. I tried dry lube and graphite spray... no go. The noise went away when I sprayed them with Rust Check industrial storage spray (green can).

The AP end links are not stainless or nickel plated, so they rust very easily. Mine were done after one winter, so I got Deeza HD end links for FJs (20% thicker shaft than stock). Sadly, they are discontinued.

The FK uniballs in the AP UCAs are stainless. I feel no slop in them after 6 winters. I think the noise is just the nature of the beast.
